Where is your kitchen window?

We're working on plans for our new kitchen addition...we're planning to start construction on the addition next spring....a 2 -1/2 car garage with the kitchen above that, so it's going to be a fairly large eat-in country kitchen. I love to cook, so I'd like to have enough room to move around in. People seem to congregate in our kitchen and, when we have dinners and parties, everybody always seems to want to help with things. We all have a great time at our house.

The sink and cabinets will be on a north-facing wall with the kitchen table at the southern side in front of large windows. There's a fireplace on the west wall next to the entranceway going into the living room; the fireplace will also be seen from the living room as well as the kitchen. There will be French doors at the entrance to the kitchen from the living room.

I would like to have a bay window at the sink area (northern end). A rather large window and I'm willing to give up some cabinet space (because there will be cabinets in the island, too) to have the room for the window. The north side will not have sunlight until late afternoon, when the sun gets to the west, hence the large bay window. The deck at the back of the house by the pool will be extended to the new kitchen area and will be enlarged for table, chairs, BBQ, etc. There will be French doors from the kitchen to the deck.

One of my GFs has basically told me that I'm crazy to want a window at my kitchen sink. She's doing her kitchen over, too, and she's moving her sink and cabinets to an inside wall. Well, that's fine for her, but it's not what I want. If I have to do dishes (and I really despise doing dishes, I might add), I don't want to look at a wall! I want to look outside at my flowers and the pool. We have a lot of bunnies in our back yard and I like to watch them. Birds, too. I enjoy watching things outside whenever I can.

So...where's your kitchen window, if you have one? If you had a choice, would you want a window at your sink area?

Your plans sound great!

We have a double window on the north side, and the sink facing the east (inside wall). If I had my druthers, there'd be a window over the sink, not just for the view (though that's important), but because there'd be more natural light there.

We have a window right over our kitchen sink. I love it, love it, love it!

So...where's your kitchen window,
In my kitchen, duh. Sorry I couldn't resist.

My kitchen (in my 120 year old house) has 3 long windows and 6 doors. One window is just to the right of sink, so basically I'm staring at the upper cabinet door when I'm at the sink. It wouldn't really make any difference to me if the sink was in front of the window, 'cause then I'd be staring at the side of my neighbor's house.

When I remodeled my kitchen a few years ago, I put the sink facing the large windows so I could look outside while doing the dishes. IMHO, you need a window to look out by the sink.

My one regret was that I put 2 windows on either side of my stove that faces west. When I cook in the evening, the light coming into those windows can blind me when I try to cook. I have to close the blinds to be able to see what's on the stove. I like the windows there the rest of the day cause it's nice to look out when you are cooking. I probably should have put the stove somewhere else in the room.

Think about how the sun travels over the course of the day and don't set yourself to a situation where you can't see what you are doing at sunrise or sunset.

My window is above the sink I wouldn't have it any other way

The last 3 homes I have lived in have not had a window above the kitchen. The current home I am in now has 3 huge bay type windows in the kitchen. I love them. So does my cat.

Ditto--my one kitchen window is over my sink. It faces west and I can see the city skyline and the sunset while I'm doing dishes. a bay window would be lovely.

In our current house the window is right above the kitchen sink. In our new house, though, the sink is against an interior wall, so no window. I'm kind of disappointed and almost wish I could rearrange the kitchen.

Our house has the sink right under the window so I can look out while I'm working. I personally prefer it - our apartment had the sinkon an interior wall and I hated staring at the wall to do dishes.

We have a window over the sink and one further down that same wall, overlooking a breakfast area. Both overlook the woods in the back of the house. And in the fall and winter when the leaves are gone you can see the mountains too.

Mine is above the sink too. I love it, and couldn't imagine doing dishes while facing a wall. It feels closed in to me, plus the window offers light and a view

The window in my kitchen is right above the sink also, and like others here, I love looking outside while I'm washing dishes.

We have a window above the kitchen sink, but it looks to the driveway and next door neighbor's fence/house. So.. I can keep an eye on my car! Woo-hoo! Nah, I do like it though, it's south-facing and it lets in a lot of sunlight.

The other window (and back door) faces east and looks to the backyard, so to your left if you're standing at the sink. Genever loves it, especially in the morning so she can lay in the sun, but she does not like the windowsill for some reason so she has just taken over the kitchen table to sunbathe and look out the window. I can't stop her no matter how many times i tell her no and put her on the floor. I hate cats on the table, but she is defiant about it. So I just sanitize more often.

We have a window above our kitchen sink too - it overlooks our garden and the forest/fields behind us. It's lovely to be able to stand and look out - can't imagine washing up facing a wall really!

our kitchen faces the street, but I definitely love having a big window right above the sink anyway, it helps me spy on all the neighbors!! Plus we have a big tree right outside that window, so I can see the birds sitting in it, etc.

My best friend DOESN'T have a window over her sink, so she painted a picture of the rolling hills of Tuscany and hung it up on that blank wall over her sink so she can look at it and dream about Italy. She'd rather have a window, though

Well in my first house we remodeled the kitchen and put a bay window looking into our yard above the sink. Our second house had 2 windows in a v-shape above the sink. Was very interesting watching a coyote walk up the street where we lived in suburbia.

Now I live in a little apt. where there is not only no window but I pretty much can cook and wash the dishes at the same time. But I love this place & Butzie loves being here with me

mine's right behind the kitchen sink and i love it. i can look out at my backyard when doing dishes.

I wish I had a kitchen window! I live in an apartment and all of my windows are on the north wall, nothing east, west or south.

Over the sink.

I have two windows on a wall in my kitchen next to an open area where we have our kitchen table. Then we have counters all along the inside wall, and on the wall that we have our stove there is a large window facing out backyard. I put an island infront of it so as I am baking I can look outside at the birds and chickens. I put a birdbath and bird feeders outside to look at.
My dream kitchen....includes a window above the sink. I love having a window to look out. I wash dishes at least once a day, staring at a plain white wall...

My kitchen is open to the dining areas; which I love. It helps with those people congregating! LOL! The whole area is basically L shaped but the kitchen itself is U shaped, with one leg of the U making a nice long and wide peninsula. The other side of it is a bar height area for eating. It's open behind that, like a smaller breakfast area with 2 windows. Then a few feet down the wall is what looks like french doors, but only one side is functional. So there is a lot of natural, morning light in there. Those look out to the back yard. The window over the sink looks more at our neighbors house than anything... LOL! I'd post a pic for you; but all of the ones of the kitchen are on my computer that has been waiting to be fixed since spring....

I have 3 windows in my kitchen. One is just a little dinky one that looks out to the main road and big field, I like having it there. The other is facing out the front of the house, it used to be a big bay window but we replaced it because the bay window was old and let out too much heat and in too much cold air. Since we redid that window though, the glare on the tv isnt as bad and I also added a nice little shelf for extra counter space. We also have a window that looks out onto our front porch, its just a cheesy little plexi glass window but its been there since we moved in and since we cant find the same exact paneling we have we dont really have anything we can do with it. I think it will stay because sometimes the cats like to go out there and hang out in the summer so I can keep an eye on them.

You guys have some neat kitchens! Mine is a u-shaped kitchen with lots of cabinets and counter tops. It's eat-in with the table right in front of the French doors at the other end.

My dream kitchen is larger with cabinets and counters. I'd like to have a baking area where I can knead and roll out yeast dough and roll pie dough without having to move a lot of stuff. And since our window faces north, yes I do want windows at the sink area. Most of all, I want room! Room to work, room to walk around without feeling so closed in.

Thanks for answering my post!

I would definitely go for a large window over the sink area. To me, it's the perfect spot for a window!
Your plans sound great and I'm sure you'll really enjoy entertaining at your house.
