I don't know why I worry so much, but I do.

When I got my cat Emma from the shelter a few weeks ago, they had her on a dry diet only. Purina Cat Chow Indoor Formula. So when I brought her home, I bought the same food and let her just get comfortable.

After reading on here and other places I learned that a wet food diet would probably be better for her, so I tried some cheap stuff on her first(Whiskas) to see what flavors she liked. She seemed to prefer Tuna and Chicken. So this weekend I went to PetSmart and picked up Natural Choice canned food, in the 3oz cans. I got a variety of different flavors and so far so good. Is this food considered complete enough for her on a daily basis? I read the ingredient list, and it doesn't list any by products in the first 5 or so ingredients which I know is something to look for. I've been feeding her two 3 oz cans per day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon/evening. She won't gobble it all down, but will eat most of it over the course of an hour or so. I've also been leaving the dry food down in between wet food servings for her to nibble on, is that a good thing to do?

Sorry for so many questions, but I want the best and most healthy diet for my cat, so I figured I would ask.

Thanks!

Natural choice is a solid premium... and it is complete and balanced for a every day diet... The only thing you may want to try is a food that has no grains in it .... where are you able to shop?

PetSmart, PetCo, and local grocery stores are pretty much it.

I can also shop on Amazon if I find something she likes or something a store around here doesn't have.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll try some other stuff when I go into the store next time and try to figure out what she likes best then stock up. I got the Natural Choice because the 3oz cans were on sale 10 for 7$. So I figured if she hated it, I wasn't out a ton of money.

Do you think it is still okay to leave the dry food I have out in between the wet food feedings? Should I get something other than the Purina dry food?

I would suggest asking for samples of dry ( petsmart usually had some) or look up and email different companies and ask
... The dry s of the companys that I named are all solid... Purina indoor is alot like a McDonalds hambuger with a side salad...

I have always feed a rotation diet( that is the name one company coined
) ... Dry, wet, home made ( cat safe of course) , raw( this takes alot of knowledge and a good vet or freeze dried
) ... Mine get a little of everything, Most folks do well with 50 canned 50 wet if you can afford it and she will eat your doing good

Check with your Petsmart, but usually they are very good at taking returns - especially of unopened wet foods...but I've even returned some opened bags of dry. Just hang on to the receipts. And good luck!

We've been buying Wellness wet food from Amazon with free shipping. The actual price of the cans pre-shipping is hard to beat, so no tax or shipping makes it the best deal possible. We get the larger cans too, which helps save some money. While our Reggie recently passed away, both cats like the Wellness food.

we feed innova, evo, and california natural but a large portion of our kittens diet is a food we buy at wal-mart called natural life. we also offer her fancy feast and now meow mix market select(all canned)because she eats a little more than 1 big can (5.5 ounce) a day she'll get a can of fancy feast or meow mix at night to tide her over till she can drag my husband out of bed for her breakfast.

we offer Taste Of The Wild dry but she won't touch it now so we're just gonna give her all canned from now on.

Be careful with the Meow Mix Market Selects. . .if I recall correctly, it has rather a lot of added sugar. Which of course is very unhealthy for cats. Check the label, I may be wrong---but a year ago I cat-sat for a kitty who ate that brand and I remember sugar being in the ingredient list.

yes we know meow mix and ff aren't the best but we make the most of her diet good quality canned. She eats so much right now and that is the best we can do, we can't afford to open two quality cans of food a day. Maybe in a couple weeks when we have our bathroom redone, but i'd kinda like a floor in the bathroom, lol.

all in all though we have noticed a great improvement. Her poop was runny and smelled horrible on dry and now it's not runny and doesn't smell, even when you're in the same room.

I'll never understand adding sugar to pet food. And watch out, because some are even putting HIGH FRUTCOSE CORN SYRUP in their pet foods.

I was cleaning at a house who has a golden, and one time I noticed her coat was looking very poorly and she had lost weight. I mentioned to the lady and she said they were trying a different food for her and showed me the bag.It was a Dads formula "Meaty Morsels" (they have changed the name since then, and added a little "beef" as the 8th ingredient). But before they changed it, there was not one speck of MEAT in the food. Not one bit. And the fifth ingredient was (and still is) High Frutcose Corn Syrup.

That stuff (HFCS) is EVIL.

So never stop reading the labels. Even when feeding premium foods, you should read the labels of every new batch.

that is good advice about checking labels. I always check the new cans of natural life compare .to the ones i have here. I never even looked at the meow mix ingredients since I know I won't like them. but i'm thinking now that I have I will be spending the extra $ on better food as soon as budget allows. yes there is HFCS in these and now i'm hesitant to feed them to her.

I have two kitties but only one will eat wet at every meal. Since he was a year old, he ate Wellness Turkey...gobbled it down....then about a month ago...(at 2yrs, 4months), he just completely stopped eating it..wouldn't even nibble. After 2 meals of not eating..I sort of panicked. Kitties need to eat. I went out to both Pet Smart and a local pet food store and bought a variety of wet foods..Blue Buffalo, Snappy Tom, B.G, Halo, Max Cat, Merrick, etc. and he'll pretty much eat any of them.

I haven't settled on just one food yet, sort of afraid that he'll stop eating it. So, I'll just keep buying a selection and hope he keeps eating. He really does like GO! Grainfree. It's funny with the Halo Spot's Stew...he can eat all around the peas...and leave them as clean as when they came out of the pod...

They eat Taste of the Wild as a dry food. That's what the other fellow will eat..only dry...so I'll keep it a premium dry for his benefit.

I don't know if Wellness had a formula change in the Turkey flavour, or what happened...but he sure didn't want to eat it anymore.

That's my experience with a suddenly fussy kitty!

It's not your cat, it's the food. They changed something. Probably used a lesser quality ingredient. It's not something you expect from such an expensive food, but sadly, it appears to be happening. I'v had the same experience with both the Wellness Turkey and the Wellness chicken. I brought them back.

Using Blue now.

Thanks, Otto, for that reply. For $3.19 plus 13% tax per can...you would think that it would contain only the highest quality ingredients. I never thought to take them back, but I feed outdoor stray cats so they got a real treat with 3 or 4 cans that went uneaten by Cameo.

I don't mind serving him a variety, but do want to whittle it down to a few choices...buying 6 or 7 varieties is bit much.....

Thanks again!!
