I don't know if it's over-grooming or allergies - or what - but I noticed Chumley's abdomen didn't have as much hair on it as it should the other day. This morning I looked at him and thought... "that's strange - how did I not notice the hair never fully grew back from when they shaved his leg for the neuter?" (Which was in May or June) - and then realized that it DID. He's been nibbling at it so it looks like there's a shaved patch!

Then tonight a small bald spot appeared on his other front leg.

So I don't know what's up with our boy, but I found a holistic DVM about 1/2 hour away, so I'm calling first thing and will take the first appt they have available.

Oh Chum!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

oh NO!

I wonder - do you think he could be allergic to foods with grain?

Be sure and let us know what the Holistic Vet says!

We had him on grain free, it didn't help (and made his diarrhea worse). We then switched him to z/d (hypoallergenic) and that made no difference (about 2 months on each). His regular vet said the itchy/scratchy he's got (feet/legs in particular) are more often environmental allergies than food allergies, though it was worth a try.

Our appointment at the new (holistic) vet is a week from Friday.

We have been working with an animal communicator, actually (and she's been amazing!
). We have a follow-up call with her this afternoon, but she did a follow-up with Chum Saturday, and yesterday told me that he isn't stressed, he's itchy. She got from him that it might be the detergent (we've been using Dreft - for babies, because of my allergies, and no liquid softener or dryer sheets). But we'll get something hypoallergenic from the health food store, and wash all of the kitty bedding with it asap.

Thanks again for vibes for Chum!

Laurie, I am glad to hear about the animal communicator. We worked with one great lady on several occasions and the insight was remarkable.

Now, the trick is to find out what makes him itchy. Poor little boy

That IS a long wait...

Ok, just keeping a record here.

Today we went to the health food store and got

Hypoallergenic, chemical- , dye- and fragrance-free laundry detergent, softener, and dish soap.

Extra virgin, organic, cold-pressed coconut oil made from first pressing of fresh coconuts. It apparently has strong anti-viral, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antihistimine properties. It's about 50% Lauric Acid (produced in mother's milk). I'm starting to use it myself - both taking it like a supplement and putting it on my arms (eczema). We'll see how it works for me too LOL. Chumley doesn't like it, but I started small and will work up to 1 - 2 tablespoons a day. I got a little in his food, and I've been rubbing it on the small bald spots on his legs. Either it stays and helps soothe the spots (it's really making my arms feel better!) - or he licks it off and it gets in him - a win-win.

I actually found several articles referring to the use of stuff in coconut oil for treating HIV - so this may be something helpful re: the FIV situation too!

We also realized it'd gotten cold and we've been using the heater. So we cleaned it - probably ought to have someone out to clean the ducts - and we put a humidifier out, because with this weather it's gotten really dry inside.
Got the humidity up where he hangs out the most up to 40% already. Hope this helps!
