Ok, so we took in a stray calico Manx kitten just over a week ago
. Talk about my dream kitten!
She was a bit thin, face was all bloody & missing a tooth. Think she's between 2 & 3 months. Super friendly & playful, only her poop is runny & sort of a peanut butter color. Not soupy-like, but really soft (like peanut butter ha ha) & because she's a Manx it tends to stick to the fur around her bum & gets on the furniture

Not sure what she was living on before we found her (we live in the country) but the day we took her in I dewormed her, put a flea collar on & put some earmite meds in her ears.
She's been on Cat Chow since & water.
Just wondering, apart from taking her to the vet of course, what we could feed her that might help harden her poop a bit. Is there any kind of supplement or possibly a different brand of food???

She definitely needs to be checked out by a vet and probably treated for tapeworms. Tapeworms generally don't show up on a fecal and aren't killed by most deworming meds. You can give her plain canned pumpkin, NOT pumpkin pie filling, to help firm up her stool.

Please take her to the vet ASAP ... I would imagine she does as mentioned have some kind of parasite issues but also ask about Manx syndrome( you can google it to get an idea )

How kind of you to take in this kitty! And welcome to TCS - we're glad you're here.

Your kitty sounds adorable.
I think, however, that rather than looking for a food to "firm up" her stool, you should probably take her to the vet to try and discover why the poop is runny to begin with.

Once your kitty is vet-checked and healthy, you can start working on getting her onto a healthy diet. My recommendation for cat food is grain-, fruit-, veggie- and fish-free canned products like the Wellness Core and grain-free varieties, Evo 95% meat varieties, grain-free Natural Balance flavors, etc. (or raw - but only after suitable research). No kibble - it's remarkably inappropriate for cats.

Good luck!

By the way - what's your kitty's name?

Please Take OFF the flea collar it can do far more harm than good... And a healthy diet will be a good thing to discuss with the vet as if your kitty has manx syndrome all canned is Not recommended and often kitty will need a very special diet ..

She was out in the country? Hopefully the missing tooth is just baby tooth and no damage was done if it was knocked out. That does need to be checked by a vet.

Your vet can treat your kitten with a topical called Revolution. Two to three monthly doses of this will take care of her fleas, roundworms and hookworms, and earmites. No need to treat those separately or deal with the messiness that older earmite drops result in.

As mentioned, she'll need a separate dewormer at the vet for tapeworms. She also needs to be tested for FIV/FeLV and depending on your area heartworms.

Since she was a stray and has loose stools she also needs to be checked for protozoa parasites. Giardia, coccidia, and tritrichomonas foetus can cause chronic loose stools and need to be ruled out or treated for.

Once she's healthy enough for it she needs basic kitten vaccinations and to be set up for a spay.

And of course, have her spine checked. Hopefully she doesn't have the more serious issues with it.

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
Almost every feral (or stray) cat around here turns up with giardia and lung worm, in addition to the usual (fleas, ticks, round worm, sometimes tapeworm). Each needs specific treatment, available only from a vet.

Your kitty needs to go to a vet to determine the reason for the diarrhea. If your kitty has giardia, there is no way to stop the diarrhea other than by treating the giardia, and as Strange Wings pointed out, there are other protozoa parasites your kitty may or may not have.

And please remove the flea collar! The problems with them have been well-documented, and they do kill cats.

Well her vet appointment isn't until next week but we bought some canned pumpkin today anyway & mixed it in with her food (sort of ironic because her name is Pumpkin!)
The flea collar was only on for 3 days but we havent actually seen any & we gave her a bath yesterday (didn't do too bad actually! Really good girl)
Her face was all covered in blood when we found her so it's possible she lost her tooth during whatever happened to her

Spoiled rotten now, though. Only cat we have that will actually play with toys! We have 2 others (mother & son) & so far Allie, the female does her best to avoid Pumpkin as much as possible, while Simon is starting to take to her. He likes to sniff noses & Pumpkin likes to smack at him lol!
Has little fear of dogs too (though our dogs are all small. She might not like big dogs too much..)

Oh no, you've been letting her interact with your other animals?!

You do not know what she has! This is very risky. At the very least you risk her giving all of your other animals roundworms.

Pumpkin had her vet appointment yesterday & she's all good! So the vet said to keep her on solids but look for foods with no corn & as few veggies as possible.
And the pumpkin is working! Poop isn't perfectly solid but it doesnt come out in puddles anymore!
& None left around her bum.
As for her teeth, the vet said it was probably knocked out because her teeth are still coming through. Her bottom fronts are a bit funny, though. THey aren't coming through evenly, but sort of crooked & all over. No eating problems though, so when she goes to be spayed ina few months the vet will have another look at them.

Glad she got a good report from the vet! For food, you need to look for GRAIN-FREE foods. We feed Wellness grain free and EVO, but EVO has recently been purchased by Proctor & Gamble so I'm not sure how long it will remain high-quality. There's also Taste of the Wild, which we feed the dry formula, and several others. If you have questions, check out the nutrition forum.

Many grain frees are very high in veggie content... read the labels carefully..

Corn and veggies are not hard to avoid... In my house Ibs/Ibd and herpes are controlled by a NO veggie dry that has rice and oats and a variety of low to no grain and veggie wets

Yes, it's now up to finding a good food for her. I'm going to check the local grocery stores first tomorrow & then if i cant find anything good there i'll try the pet store & vet.
Our cats have been on Cat Chow for about 8 years now because we had inherited (so-to-speak) a very fat old cat from my uncle & that was the only brand of cat food we could find that he would eat. Wouldn't touch the healthy stuff, canned food or tuna! He just passed away last month at the age of 17!

what stores do you have near you... 99% of better foods are not in the grocery store... You are starting from a very low end food( are you using the Blue bag or the green bag?)

2 weeks ago I found a Manx kitten his butt was clumped with poo I cleaned him up and now he is using the litter box but he leaks pee. I took him to the vet and he has Manx Syndrome he is doing fine but he will probably always leak. The vet said it could be worse he could have weak or no back leg movement and he could leak poo. It depends on how much nerve development they get my Manx is under develop in the bladder and balls and his growth is very stunted. When I took him to the vet I thought he was maybe 10 weeks old he is around 6 months. I would say your kitty has Manx Syndrome and she hasn't got nerve development in the bowl area the vet did say that with time it is possible for the nerves to connect and everything come together as they get older but it is possible that it never happen. I wash my bedding every 4 days now and use lots of Frebreeze. I do use pepto when my cats get runny poo that should help some. Just give a little with a syringe depending on weight I usually give one half cc they don't like the taste but it is better than the running poo. Good luck

Hope your kitten will be ok. Get the vets opinion and checkup.

I have a Manx myself (3yrs old), and I'm happy to say she got better from when she was a kitten. She still has flareups and little bits get around the house, but its manageable. She only weighed half what she shouldve when we got her at 8weeks old from a petstore adoption day.

It doesnt seem to matter what I feed her, her poo still gets runny sometimes. They used to eat EVO (a very very good food, and expensive) and now eat Max cat (cheaper but still good). Wet foods have varied.

If there is a magic solution to end her problem, I havent found it yet, but I love her more than I can say anyway

There are those people who put diapers on them lol PM me if you need any help at all

Update it's been 4 weeks and my Dougal (Manx kitten I found dumped out side) has stopped leaking pee.I have put revolution on him and gave him a tape worm pill and got his shots. I am not sure that either thing helped his leaking, it may have just been the time the vet told me it would take to get the full nerve development he needed. Next month he gets his very miniature balls cut and hopefully he will be a full working little kitty. He has a great understanding home now and maybe that is part of his luck of coming through his misfortune. Wish everyone luck with there Manx kitty, just remember to give a little time for nature to straighten things out all thought I would have a vet check with any new kitty.
