Trying To Groom Uncooperative Cat

I recently got a rescue cat who is 4 yrs old. Belle has long hair and she came extremely matted behind the ears. It took a long time to cut them out little by little.
She does not like to be combed and she is matting faster than I can comb her out.
Is there any homeopathic drug/solution I can give her to calm her down enough to groom her. She fights like crazy to get away. I try to make it enjoyable, but she is having none of it.
I'd hate to take her to the vet to be put to sleep just to have her groomed, but it may come to that.
She is loveable when "she wants to be" and sleeps on my shoulder like a baby. She just hates being groomed. HELP!
Hugs,

Welcome DeLoris,
Thank you for rescuing Belle.

My kitties have short coats so I am not much help here but keep checking back. I am sure that members who have experience with their kitties fur matting will have some tips for you.

If you have questions about the site, I would be glad to help...
just send a private message to my username, I will get back to you asap.
Please make yourself at home.

Hi - welcome!

I hear what you're saying - We, too, have a former stray that gets all matted. He doesn't want any brushing beyond his face and neck.

He got his britches so matted I did have to take him to the vet, they sedated him to groom him and give him a sanitary shave. They only sedated him AFTER they tried everything else, though.

I can't help with any suggestions as to what you can do at home. I'd just call the vet and see what their procedure is - they may be good at handling cats, and it would be worth the $$ for them to do it, especially if they'll just sedate only IF necessary, and not put them "under" to groom.

I must add - my boy still doesn't like to be groomed!!! I get in a few swipes whenever I can, otherwise - well, he does have some mats now even with my efforts. His fur is so fine it's hard to keep it from matting - even though he is no longer an "outside cat" he still gets the mats.

He's otherwise a very easy-going creature - but, I know better to insist after I get a few growls and/or hisses.

(in this pic - his ears are back because he's evaluating the jump on to the chair)

So - call your vet - hopefully they know how to handle cats without having to anesthetize her.

Thank you so much for the info. Your cat is beautiful. He looks like Belle just in a diff color. Her fur is very fine as well. It may take my vet to get her combed out.
Hugs,
DeLoris
