Sweet little Portia is home and settling into the bathroom. We determined at Petsmart that she's not too crazy about dogs (black lab pup nearby, she did these short hiss-spats at it). Got her home, and while she was still in the pet stroller, JoJo came about 6 feet up to it and just looked at her. Portia looked back, but no ears back, no hissing, nothing. Then JoJo ran and hid under the couch. I had to immediately take off for a hair cut appt, but i just got home half an hour ago and put the second baby gate up above the first, and opened the door. Again, no hissing or anything...

So far, so good. Pictures to come later... I'll have most of tomorrow to spend at home with them... My friend Sue, whose van I drove, and who accompanied me out there, just fawned over her. She's so gorgeous... she needs a really good brushing out... she has the floofy fur instead of the soft bunny fur that JoJo has... But I have the Furminator... she'll get a good grooming at some point soon...

Granted, it's way early for face to face, I know, but I have the baby gates up with the bathroom door open. I want her to get used to me and my voice, as well as the general sounds of the place. JoJo finally went up to the gate and there was some low growling, a hiss or two, but nothing major. The door will be closed for the most part, but I wanted her to get used to me. When I'm asleep or gone, it'll be closed, and mostly closed when I'm elsewhere in the apartment. I was cooking dinner and cleaning up the kitchen so I was a few feet from her...

She's apparently quite the escape artist... of course, I don't blame her, she was with C.A.T. since mid August, and at Multnomah County shelter before that for a bit (I can look it up, I have copies of all the paperwork). She's been in cages for a few months, to say the least... the Adoption Counselor told me that before I arrived, she tried to get loose. The door to the adoption area is locked, so they put a soft cat toy in the hole where the door locks, and then close it... then they put a large wheeled cart in front of it... they turned around and found the door being pushed open, cart and all!! It was Portia. I have a feeling that once we get all settled in, she'll be much more social to visitors.. which is something I want.

She let me rub her belly too! She's a sweetheart so far...

I'm so happy that Portia is finally there with you. Letting you rub her belly is a very good sign!! She's in her forever home now where she'll be loved and cared for the rest of her life. I do hope that her adjustment is quick and easy and she settles into her new family smoothly. Sending good luck vibes

Oh I am so happy for you and for sweet Portia!

I am so glad you got her - I am sure things will go very smoothly, from the looks of things so far!

But here are some more "smooth intro" vibes for her!

She's warmed up to me very quickly... When I go in there to use the bathroom, she purrs and purrs and gets up on her hindquarters (like a prarie dog) for scritches, very curious. I was looking for some cold meds (sinus infection hitting the lungs, so I was looking for my Mucinex), and she stood up on her hind legs again and helped me look through the drawer...

Now we just need to win JoJo over...

Good for You! And Her! She's a beauty. What a lucky kitty (and smart, too) to find you! She's a real beauty.

It sounds like you are going to keep the name "Portia." I love that name, by the way. Love the Shakespeare play, and then Rumpole of the Bailey called one of his colleagues "Portia" as a pet name (who here knows what I'm talking about?). Of my 5 current shelter cats, I kept 3 of their names because I liked them. Two names I changed, but they learned the new ones quickly. Anyway, "Portia" is a great name and I've considered it for a cat name myself.

Best wishes to all of you.
