Update on Dusty

Some of you may remember that I thought I was going to have to put Dusty down a few months ago. She has CRF that was diagnosed about 2 years ago. She had lost a tremendous amount of weight and was under 6 lbs. Then last spring she developed a horrid ear infection. After one course of meds that wasn't improving, the vet sedated her to look inside her ears. They were completely blocked. So she went on different meds. She lost even more weight, was dehydrated, her fur was falling out, and she appeared to be at death's doorstep. Even the vet said I should consider putting her out of her misery, and at that suggestion I dissolved into tears.

So fast forward a few months. She has put on weight. I no longer feel her bony spine like I did. The fur has grown back around her neck and behind her ears. She has a spring in her step. She is eating like mad - twice what she used to eat! She is like a kitty reborn! I am not treating her CRF because I want her to enjoy whatever time God gives her, and I don't want to force feed her or stick needles in her.

She is now eating 1 can of Friskies a day plus Kirkland dry and every other day or so I give her one cube of raw chicken liver for her anemia. She is happy and affectionate once more, and I have my old friend back. I couldn't be happier!

I certainly remember the troubles you two went through. I am so happy to see she is perked up!

That is what love and dedication can do.

Continued for a long time with your Dusty.

I love stories like this one. How wonderful for you and Dusty to have some more time to cuddle and love each other. Each moment is precious with our cats. Things can change so quickly and they can be gone. Let us cherish them every minute. Dusty, you go, we are pulling for you.

So Glad Dusty is doing so well.

Dusty

Keep it up baby!

PS I just want to add two things. Eating ravenously can indicate hyperthyroid disease, which often accompanies CRF, I know you will watch her weight closely, so if she seems to be losing, even while eating a ton, get her to the vet fro blood work.

Also, giving sub q fluids at home is not nearly as invasive or traumatizing as people think, cats adjust to it quite well, and many in fact come to realize that it helps them feel better and accept it easily. And, in fact, it often becomes a special bonding time for cat and human.
