Hello TCS,

What is your opinion on giving a cat clindamycin for 5 days the 1st of each month indefinitely. My little guy, Kuki went to the vet today for a dental. Last time I took him to get a dental the vet also gave me clindamycin but i discontinued using it because he lost a lot of weight etc. Once i stopped giving him the medicine, he gained some weight and is now 15 pounds.

My question to everyone here is what experience if any have you had administering this medicine to your cats?

Thanks in advance

I don't understand.... Why would you want to do that? Is that something your vet wants you to do? I have only given Clindamycin as needed - before or after dentals, for infections due to Stomatities, but not indefinitely.... That is a strong antibiotic...

Food alllergy ... heredity ... age ... diet..are issues with Gingivitis

Antibiotic therepy is used for a reason not a every few weeks ... Ie before a dental, if other mouth issues arise...

There are many other options in treating it ...

How old is the cat

You need proper treatment with a dentist IMHO - a life on antibiotics is way too much on kitties liver and kidneys. Please find a dentist who deals with gingivitis and stomatitis. I have a cat with Stomatitis - trust me, been there done that... NOT the route you want to go. Please seek proper treatment... This will only buy you a little (tinny) amount of time.

I do not plan on following his directions. I think I know more about stomatitis than he does. When I first took him in for a dental he advised me to do the same. Which like i said i did do at first but then discontinued it because i feared that it would ruin his liver etc. I found a vet somewhat close who deals with issues like stomatitis on a daily basis.

I plan to give Kuki the antibiotic for the next couple of days only because he just got the dental today but that's it. I also do not like the fact that it's 11:29pm here and my little guy still seems to be under the effects of anesthesia. I do not recall any of my others being dazed for so long.

Thanks for your input.

He's 4. I think I just need to take more precautions and keep his teeth clean by brushing them etc. When the vet first told me he has stomatitis 2 years ago I did a lot of research and if he does have stomatitis, it is a minor case of it. His gums are a little pinkish but nothing major. I hope to take better care of his teeth from now on.

Yeah, that's totally weird... cat's do bounce back from anesthesia very fast... Maybe he is under the effect of something else? Like pain meds?
Glad you have another option as far as vets... That's major!

I have had a few with anestesia reactions... though not as common...Do you know what kind and drug was used

Please run a FULL course do to dental ... around here it is 10/14 days for that drug fir a course... using it for a couple days will risk a HIGH rate of infection

Please get a second opnion as I think this vet is guessing... If he has MILD gingivitis often it is either genetic or a food allergy... Has he had reabsorptive lesions?

Ok I will definitely do a full course of the antibiotics. He has not had any lesions whatsoever. I look at his mouth and gums on a weekly basis. I'm thinking its a genetic issue. My little guy was rescued off the streets when he was 5 months old and had mange.

When the vet first told me he had stomatitis, I joined a stomatitis group online and the pictures did not look like his mouth at all. I switched his food but if anything he just got skinnier so I put him back on his regular food.

I'm hoping the other vet I plan to visit will have better answers because surely this one has no idea.
