Just accepted my 3rd stray. It seems to be a Himalayan. I would like to start calling it by name but I can't tell if a female or male !?!....any tips.
It is isolated from my other cats until I an get to the vet for a complete check up.
Thanks in advance.

All the fluff back there is getting in the way, huh?

Hold the cat and part the fur. It's the only sure way.

Some people, if around a lot of cats, can make very good gender guesses based on the face. It's sort of hard to explain, but I've noticed that most female cats look what I call feminine - a little more delicate around the eyes and jaw. Male cats seem to have a straighter brow.

Haha, longhairs can be complicated. If the kitty is friendly enough, just part the fur and take a good look. If he's a tom it should be fairly obvious . Also, if it's an intact male, the urine odor will be VERY strong, there's really no mistaking tomcat smell. Telling a neutered male from a female is more difficult when there's fur in the way. If all else fails, just let the vet figure it out.

Thanks for the advice- I was able to 'part the hair' and she appears to be a female (my hopes)..I didn't see anything male-like!??

So now I can call her Lilywhite.....Lily

IMO I'd have the cat verified on the sex before you name him/her. If the cat is neutered, it would look like a girl with no balls.

All our males - with short fur , still have their little pouches that you can easily tell if they are male - but, it's harder with the long-furred guys, their britches are too furry to easily detect their maleness.

Our stray and ferals (former ferals that is) have had several name changes - I left the naming up to my husband. We didn't name the (feral) kittens until after the trip to the vet to be altered and then knew for sure who was the female and who was the male.

Just part the fur more. Even if neutered so that there's not really much there the spacing does not change. A male cat's urethra doesn't suddenly migrate closer to their butt.
