Well, I always listen to what my vets say about what to feed my cats, but after reading a lot of stuff on different forums, blogs, scientific journals, etc, I have become overwhelmed by the choices out there!! Sometimes I think I should just blindly follow the vets, but I would never blindly follow my doctors!

Okay, so Piccalo has multiple problems - she is very prone to UTIs and I was told she had Herpes when she was a kitten. It is dormant now, but her tear ducts were permanently damaged, so I have to clean her eyes daily. She also has problems with constipation and furballs (which we keep down with the furminator and wet food). Pounce is pretty healthy, but she does has FHS. Both cats are (as of now) overweight.

So - they eat Royal Canin Feline Urinary S/O. The vet here in Japan changed them to a Moderate Calorie version of this, and I measure how much food they get per day so I am not overfeeding.
Also I give them a half can of wet food per day. In the US, they got a full can of Fancy Feast, but Pounce eats 90% of the wet food, so when I brought them here I cut back to a half can. They eat stuff we get at the pet store - brand name is Japanese, so not useful! My husband reads the ingredients, and it seems to be mostly fish, aspic, sometimes really tiny whole fish, some shredded chicken, and occasionally beef.
They have lost weight already in the month they have been here! Not too fast, but they definitely look and act healthier - have more energy, want to play more.
So - I think what I feed them is okay... but again, I am second-guessing myself.

Has the RC keep urinary problems under control? Has Pounce's FHS been a problem on this or the recent food? Are you happy with their coat and stools?

If so, the food's working for them. You could try to feed the highest grain free food you could get a hold of and have them do terribly on it. The food that's best is what works for your cats and keeps them healthy.

Keep up with the gradual weight loss and get them to playing a couple times a day. Solid exercise will help keep them healthy, too.

Yes, Piccalo is doing quite well on the RC (in fact, only gets UTIs if she is SUPER stressed since we started her on it several years ago!) I never thought about Pounce's FHS in relation to her diet! She was on medication for it, but my mom stopped giving it to her about 2 years ago and she is perfectly fine. They both have gorgeous coats! They had a bit of dandruff after the move to Tokyo, but that was obviously stress and they are great now. And except for Piccalo's occasional constipation, I am happy with their stools.
Thanks so much! I knew I was over-analyzing this, but it is so easy to get caught up in the research! Now I can go worry about something else!
