Definitely down! I have two dogs and three cats...They've never messed with the toilets before, but I don't want to risk any of them getting into the toilet reguardless. I use cleaning products to keep my toilet clean, so I don't want them ingesting and getting sick from that.

I can't stand it when my guests leave the seat up eithor! Drives me crazy, so I typically sneak into the bathroom behind them and shut it

I like the lids to stay down in our house, for no particular reason. I don't go running in to make sure people put it down though. If I happen to walk past and notice it's up I will put it down, but I don't seek it out. Nora doesn't pay attention to the toilets, so that isn't really a concern to me, I just like it down. lol

Lid up in the bathrooms where we keep the doors closed, and lid down in the bathroom where we keep the door open.

Down, since Oliver shows such an interest. That doesn't, of course prevent him from investigating while the room is occupied. When he was a kitten, my husband accidently "wet" his ear.

I too make sure my lid is shut - but rather than put a note on the toilet ** where once the lid is UP it won't be noticed ** put it on the INSIDE of the bathroom door at eye level
This way they see it when they go to leave the bathroom

My lid is always UP, Autumn has no interest in the TB at all. When I go out and during the night I do close the bathroom door tho but only because she likes to sniff around in the trash can.

Down. Not only does it look more clean, but an open lid means that dogs and cats can drink from the toilet, which is highly disgusting and unsanitary for them. I wouldn't let a kid drink from the toilet, and I sure wouldn't, so I'd never let my pets do it either because of bacteria and residual chemicals.

So definitely down.

DOWN.

When my MIL was in town I had to constantly remind her, she just would not put it down. Finally I just went in every time she came out to put the lid down since I couldn't get her to do it. It was pretty annoying. Lilly was only 2 1/2 months old at the time and so tiny I was afraid she'd jump in and not be able to get out.

When Maia was a kitten, one of her favorite places to run into was the bathroom, jump up onto the toilet and then into the sink........I already had the germ-a-phobia, times ten as far as Maia's safety!

Here... or There... Hmmm
Down, it's just been habit since we got Kitters. It does kinda bug me when people do leave it up, but Kitters is actually quite good and doesn't mess with it, though she LOVES to run in the bathroom when I go in there and has to look in before I'm allowed to sit!
DH calls her "Inpector Number 9"
as she does that AND has to check all in coming and out going packages!

Toilet Lid and seat down - especially having a Turkish Van in the house.

I got in the habit pf keeping the lid down when I was a kid because there was a shelf over the toilet and if you didnt keep the lid down things always fell off the shelf into the toilet.

So it's ingrained habit, but even if it wasn't I would keep it down because of the cats.

The in-laws have shelves over their toilets - for towels (in the one bathroom they keep an extra roll of toilet paper up there, too). I've so far knocked two rolls of toilet paper in, a wash cloth, and a hand towel. I was able to catch the bath towel that fell..

It's illegal for a public toilet to have a lid. The regulations state that all public toilets must have that opening in the front of the seat and no lid. I don't know if it's a safety thing or a sanitation thing.

I never had to worry about lid up or down before this year. Of course I always closed it when there were small kittens in the house, but most of them outgrew their fascination and I could leave it open if I wanted. But this current batch of kittens are crazy! They like to throw their toys in the water and fish them out. So it's lid down all the time now.

Lid DOWN! It is just gross for me to have the lid up - it invokes too many memories of hours spent hanging over the toilet puking... (Migraines, not hangovers!)
My husband is a lid up kinda guy, but I have taught him better!
When I was a kid, one of the reasons why the cats couldn't live in the house was because they drowned in toilets (or so I was told by my older brother)!
I still have nightmares about that!

Gosh, I've had cats for so long that it's jut a habit now to make sure it's down. I've always been paranoid about a kitty falling in

OMG Flowerbelle would never forgive us if we left the lid open! It's one of her favorite places to curl up!

Thankfully we've never had anyone visit that's ever left the lid open!
