So am I the only crazy one that is constantly running into the bathroom after guests use it to be sure they put the lid down???
I do it because I don't want the cats getting into the toilet especially because hubby insists on blue toilet water. Obviously can't have the cats getting into that!

I happened to mention this to a co worker today and she laughed and confided she did the same thing!

My brother is staying with me for the weekend with his girlfriend. I am thinking I am going to have to put a note on the toilet lol.

***oops in the poll i said "seat" .....meant to say lid***

I totally do the same thing! My cats like to jump onto the toilet and then onto the counter so I can turn on the tap and let them have a drink. They don't always check to make sure the lid is down. I had a cat when I was a kid that tried that...the lid was up and she landed in the toilet! Had to have a bath, never tried that again

I grew up with dogs that drank out of the toilet if the lid was up, so I learned early on to put the lid DOWN or else you stepped in water on the floor and sat in water on the toilet seat.

I always tell visitors that whoever leaves the lid open gets to give Miss Patchwillow a bath when, not if, she falls in. I will volunteer to take them to the ER for stitches afterward. That works pretty well most of the time.

I have no choice since the lid broke off and I have yet to replace it. Besides, the cats have shown no interest,

Up usually. But we close the bathroom doors, so the cats don't get into it. We also keep my bonsai tree in the bathroom because the doors are closed. (Hoshi ate all the leaves off, twice, when it was left out).

Nero loves to climb in the toilet
All three of them love to visit the bathroom when the door opens.

That is too funny!!! I have tried telling guests to be sure to put the lid down but not all of them remember......especially if they've been enjoying a nice glass or two of wine

The poll is worded confusingly so to explain:

Toilet SEAT = down
Toilet LID = up

My cats do not bother with the water at all.

Sorry - didn't mean to make it confusing. I was meaning if you close the lid or not. LID up or down.

Ewwwwww DOWN! Whether I have cats or not, the lid is down. I don't want to stare into the bowl whenever I go near the bathroom. Guests NEVER put it back down and it drives me nuts. DH and I are pretty sure we're the only ones who like it down.

Since I was raised by a single mom, it's always been down.

HOWEVER, two observations.

1. Most new couples have the old argument: Do we leave the toilet in the "lazy man" position (lid and seat up) or the "lazy woman" position (lid up, seat down).

2. There is a perfect reply to the woman who tells her new husband he has to put the seat down but leave the lid up after he uses it. "Why? I had to put it up, why shouldn't you put it down?"

However, with cats in the house, and especially small fosters, the only safe way is seat and lid down.

We tend to leave the lid up really. The bathroom is out of the way and the door is always shut, and the cat definitely isn't interested in it. The only time it goes down really is when my nephew is around.

Oh, but people have commented about visitors - I always put it down at others peoples houses.. I'd rather put it down and them wonder why I did, than leave it up, it just feels wrong to leave it up in others houses!

Why is a clean toilet ewwwwwwwy and not to be looked at? I never understood that. It's clean water, and if the homeowner is clean, then the toilet should be clean. Nothing ewwwy there.

But then I really don't care, its one of those small things I can't be bothered with. Either my butt is on the seat, or I'm at the sink washing up. I don't generally look at the toilet when I go into the washroom unless I am planning on using it.

When using other ppls or public washrooms I ALWAYS look at the toilet. Ewwwwww is finding pee on the seat
so I look before I sit.

Others have commented on being guests: I will leave the lid in whatever position I found it
especially if they have pets or young children.

I am so with you. I would add that I am weird enough to find it more eewwy that I have to touch unknown things with my fingers rather than my butt. That means that seat down is more suspect to me because I need to grope it before I know what it might reveal

For our cats I had to do the down-seat for quite a while and remind guests. Nowadays it does not seem to be an issue but periodically when our little paw fisher gets a fascination that lasts about two weeks at a time. I never put long-lasting cleaners in potty so that I do not need to worry.

Lid down even though we keep the bathroom doors shut, too. The lid goes down before flushing, too, otherwise urine or fecal matter particles are sprayed out.
