Urinalysis, Senior Pet Blood profile and full checkup. I'll have the results tomorrow, but thus far:
  • Vet was impressed by Sasha's great condition for an 18 year-old cat
  • Teeth and gums surprisingly healthy for an 18 year-old cat
  • Heart's fine, no murmur and great heart rate
  • No jaundice - liver's fine
  • I'll know more about the kidneys once the test results come back, however the Vet was a bit concerned that Sasha was a bit dehydrated and his eyes looked a bit sunken.
Most likely scenario: a thyroid issue, which is treatable.
Second likeliest scenario: diabetes, also treatable.

In the Vet's opinion, if Sasha's kidneys were impaired or if he had an infection., he would have been in a lot of pain and his dehydration would have been a lot worse; but the blood and urine analysis will let us know for sure.

I fed both Sasha and Tiggy an tablespoonful of Performatrin Ultra Salmon bisque, which they both polished off!

  • no crystals in the urine
  • Kidneys are okay, better than he anticipated
  • there were however traces of blood in the urine sample
It would seem that Sasha has a case of Cystisis (irritated bladder), explaining the peeing outside the litter box and the traces of blood in his pee. The Vet wants Sasha on medicine for the next week (I'm so hyper I forget the name) which is a pain killer/anti inflamatory if I understood him properly...

Then he'll check up on us and have another blood panel (kidneys only this time, cheaper than the first one) done in a month or so to make sure everything's okay...

Is he doing anything else for the bladder inflammation? Did you get the results of the Urinalysis? Torbutorol, as far as I know, is just a very VERY strong pain killer, actually used post surgery... I am not aware of any anti-inflammatory properties of it... It helps with the urination problem, as he is not going to be afraid of peeing on the box, but you will be merely masking the symptoms IMHO. I would looking into treating the symptoms instead... Just my two cents for what is worth...
Bugsy had the same thing recently - but he was bleeding quite a bit. Yes, he did get a pain killer, but only for a couple of days while waiting for the antibiotic to kick in. My vet does not recommend longer use than that at all due to constipation issues... Your vet wants him to take for a whole week? No antibiotic? IMHO, I would question that... If the bladder is inflamed, I would try an anti-inflammatory (and I would not use Metacam, BTY) or antibiotic, but not just pain meds...
