Hi guys,

I got a message from a frien who's cat has been put on medication for Blood in his stool. It has been a few days since begining the medication and now the cat's feces is Orangish in color.

I told her to call the vet to confirm but I believe some medications can change the color and consistancy of stool. Am I correct??

I also suggested it could be a sign of Virus or Parasite (Possibly he had a lot of worms??)
Also orange diarrhea or loose stool can be a sign of Coccida. which is somthing that requires antibiotics.

I have asked her to contact her vet... is there anything I might have missed?

I would say that the first thing your friend should do is contact the vet. Even if he or she needs to make a call to an ER clinic, contact with a vet is key. ER clinics do not charge for phone calls and, while they typically can't give too much information over the phone, they will let you know if it's something that absolutely needs to be seen immediately or if it can wait until the next morning. It's a triage of sorts, if you know what I mean.

Since your friend's cat initially was being treated for blood in his or her stool, it's imperative for your friend to speak to a vet ASAP. Yes, some foods and medications can cause a cat's stool to change color and consistency. And, yes, coccidia can cause the stool in some cats to turn an odd color. However, there are many other possibilities as well -- some minor such as food coloring and some more serious such as too much bile in the stool which could indicate reflux or other issues. It would also be important to know what the cat is being treated for. Blood in the stool is usually indicative of another issue going on. Without having all of the information, there's not much any of us can offer in terms of suggestions.

My advice to your friend would be to call the vet...now. It could be nothing, but it also could be a very big something. Good luck and please let us know how it all works out.
