Good morning everyone. I just wanted to post a quick update for Muffin. I was able to hold him this morning and look under his leg where they shaved. There are three places there and they really don't look bad at all. When I opened the cage in the garage where he and Mattie spent the night, he ran up the steps to get in the house and ran to the back door that opens to the porch. He ate all his food and has had his first Clavamox for the day. I am very encouraged. He doesn't act like he is sore at all.

Do your best to closely inspect those wounds, though. Puncture wounds can look fine and then suddenly get really nasty because of infection building up inside them. I've had to care for several cats that have been wounded from other cats and as is the case with animal bites (since mouths are dirty) it always gets infected.

We have a lot of hawks in our neighborhood and DH once saw a hawk fly off with a young cat. Can a hawk pick up a full-grown cat does anyone know?

I don't know about a hawk, but a bald eagle can and will!

Bald eagle = 8-12lb bird with wings to support it's weight. Cat = 8-15lbs.

Explain where the bird is getting the extra lift from.

But to answer the question, hawks, eagles, and owls are not large enough to take off with an adult cat that will fight back. Small kittens, around the size of a rabbit, are at risk. They don't attack and take off with children, either. These are myths.
Eagles and larger hawks also tend to avoid people.

I know puncture wounds from cats can get really nasty. The vet has Muffin taking Clavamox for 14 days. That is an antibiotic so I am hoping it will keep him from having any infections. But I am watching.

Puncture wounds from anything can get nasty. Example: 23+ years of sewing and repeatedly stabbing my fingers and thumbs with needles. Never had one get infected and what happens? Last week I poke myself and am now trying to keep the infection in my thumb under control.

Expect infection, if it doesn't get as bad as you worry it will then you can be pleasantly surprised.
I hope the antibiotics are enough to keep it under control and fight it. Make sure you give Muffin a little food before his doses of Clavamox since it can upset some kitties stomachs.

I hope he heals up quickly.

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
SO glad to hear he's feeling better!

Keeping up the vibes that the wounds won't fester and the Clavamox is strong enough to do the trick!

...and

Glad Muffin is doing okay. My girlhood cat's name was Muffin and it always gives me a start to see your threads about him. My Muffin was a girl kitty.

How's the Muffin-man doing today? I sure hope the antibiotic is helping.

Muffin is continuing to do good. I checked the wounds under his left paw. They look real good, no redness, swelling and no sign of infection. He takes the Clavamox very well with a pill popper. I think he got used to pills when he was taking Denamarin every day. I give him the pill and a syringe of water afterwards. He is not stiff or sore acting. I had to be gone all day so left him and Mattie on the porch with water and litter box. They are spending nights in the garage. we have been going out at night and keep checking for wandering critters or critters in the pecan tree. So far so sign of anything. Keep up the vibes and prayers for him. He is a tough little guy.

Muffin is a little on the lethargic side tonight. I am wondering if these antibiotics are making him feel bad. They always do that to me whenever I have to take them. I am trying to give it to him when he has food in his stomach. Also I can tell he is traumatized because when I put him off the screen porch into the yard, he sits with his nose stuck at the door to get back in. He won't go off the top step into the yard. I think tomorrow I am going to put him in the yard and sit out there with him. I think he is remembering what happened to him. He is such a sweet cat. He purrs everytime you touch him or pick him up. I just hate that this has messed him up, but I guess time will help him too.
