Muffin is Hurt

When I went to let Muffin and Mattie on the porch early this morning for their food, Muffin was gone. He was in the box where they sleep and wouldn't come out. Hubby took the box top off and I got him. He was limping on his back legs and wouldn't eat his food. We were able to tell that something had got into the yard and dug its way out where the fence meets the house by the bedroom window. The vet checked him out. X-Rays look clear. He has puncture wounds under his right front leg and scratches on his belly. He was given a shot of anti-inflamatory and started on Clavamox. This has never happened before. Hubby found a place where it looks like one of the braces on top of the fence was broken down. He did the repairs. My cats will sleep in the garage several nights until we can determine what is hanging out here in the yard. Please send some prayers for Muffin.

Poor Muffin - lots of for him! Do you have any idea what got in the yard? A fox or coon?

Best Wishes to Muffin, I know we had a few incidents with my old cat Smokey getting into trouble with the local wildlife. A hawk tried to pick him up and fly off with him and also he got into a scuffle with a racoon so I understand. Since then my cats have all be the indoor kinds. I hope Muffin gets better soon

Probably a raccoon, dog, or coyote to be strong enough to break part of the fence.

I hope Muffin is UTD on rabies vac in case it was a raccoon.

That's one of the problems with the purrfect fence kit, we didn't go with it due to price and the fact that it didn't look as sturdy as it needs to be. (IMO, to be safe you need a more solid fence around the yard containing a purrfect fence - I seem to recall suggesting that to you before when you mentioned coyotes)
I did have a neighbors dog bust through the lattice on my deck months ago after the cats food (it was daylight still, the cats had just been fed). Luckily Boo hid in his house and MewMew went up the tree. If there's any way to add places for the cats to hide/run to when outside it will help a little.

I hope Muffin's wounds heal up quickly and he isn't too spooked when you put him back in the fence.

The hole whatever it was dug to get out was not large enough for a dog, coyote, fox or bobcat. A dog , coyote or Fox would have dug it's way in. So it was either a coon, possum or cat since it was obvious whatever it was came over top of the fence and the hole was not big enoughf or a bobcat to get out of. The vet said it likely would have been a situation with worse wounds if it were a coon. I do have a large cage in my garage where they will be spending the nights for awhile. I wish my cats could be the indoor kind too, but it is not possible because of husband's severe allergy problems. There is a tree in the yard, but I guess he couldn't get to it in time to get up it and any of those animals could have gone up it too right along with him.

for Muffin.

I have severe allergies and asthma, and live with 8 indoor-only kitties in an RV (310 sq. ft). If you want to chat about how I manage living with the kitties (if hubby's willing to try), feel free to PM me.

Oh no! Gee, I hope Muffin is ok. You just never know what lurks out there do you?

Many and prayers for Muffin and you and DH. Must have been a real shock.

Muffin is not moving around any more than necessary. He has spent the afternoon on the porch. I took my guitar out and sat with him and sang to him. He cuddled up next to me and enjoyed every minute of it. He is eating and drinking and just laying around but the vet said he could develop some soreness. I hope he will be better tomorrow. They won't be spending any nights outside for awhile.

Muffin. I know you will keep an eye on those punctures, I worry about abscesses.

I recommend you have him tested for FeLV/FIV in three months.

Keep us posted.

Mufffin is up to date on shots. He got the shot for feline leukemia in June. I will ask my vet about the need for follow up testing. He is wonderful and loves my cats just like I do. I am sure he will make the right recommendations. Thanks for the reminder.

FeLV vaccine, good, but it is FIV I would be concerned about, since you don't know what animal you are dealing with. FIV is spread through deep bite wounds.

I mentioned the FELV because you said test him for both in your first thread. I know how FIV is spread..I read some on it and what I read said it would show in the blood after a month. I will check with his vet and go with whatever he recommends. He knows how much I love Muffin and I am sure he will take all precautions. Thank you for the reminder.

FeLV/FIV is a combo test (called SNAP), that's why I mentioned both. And anyway, the FeLV vaccine is only about 75-85% effective.

Not trying to argue or be pushy, just explaining myself. I know you will do what is best for Muffin.

I hope Muffin is doing good this am.

What we did when we wanted to see just what was lurking in our yard was get one of those wildlife cameras. You just set it up, and it emits a beam. Once something breaks that beam, it takes a picture.

Then you hook it up to the computer and there it is.

We saw a fox, a bunch of deer, racoons, our feral cats, rabbits. Oh and my DH who accidently got in the way of the beam!

Good morning everyone. I just wanted to post a quick update for Muffin. I was able to hold him this morning and look under his leg where they shaved. There are three places there and they really don't look bad at all. When I opened the cage in the garage where he and Mattie spent the night, he ran up the steps to get in the house and ran to the back door that opens to the porch. He ate all his food and has had his first Clavamox for the day. I am very encouraged. He doesn't act like he is sore at all.

Do your best to closely inspect those wounds, though. Puncture wounds can look fine and then suddenly get really nasty because of infection building up inside them. I've had to care for several cats that have been wounded from other cats and as is the case with animal bites (since mouths are dirty) it always gets infected.

We have a lot of hawks in our neighborhood and DH once saw a hawk fly off with a young cat. Can a hawk pick up a full-grown cat does anyone know?
I don't know about a hawk, but a bald eagle can and will!

Bald eagle = 8-12lb bird with wings to support it's weight. Cat = 8-15lbs.

Explain where the bird is getting the extra lift from.

But to answer the question, hawks, eagles, and owls are not large enough to take off with an adult cat that will fight back. Small kittens, around the size of a rabbit, are at risk. They don't attack and take off with children, either. These are myths.
Eagles and larger hawks also tend to avoid people.

I know puncture wounds from cats can get really nasty. The vet has Muffin taking Clavamox for 14 days. That is an antibiotic so I am hoping it will keep him from having any infections. But I am watching.

Puncture wounds from anything can get nasty. Example: 23+ years of sewing and repeatedly stabbing my fingers and thumbs with needles. Never had one get infected and what happens? Last week I poke myself and am now trying to keep the infection in my thumb under control.

Expect infection, if it doesn't get as bad as you worry it will then you can be pleasantly surprised. I hope the antibiotics are enough to keep it under control and fight it. Make sure you give Muffin a little food before his doses of Clavamox since it can upset some kitties stomachs.

I hope he heals up quickly.

SO glad to hear he's feeling better!

Keeping up the vibes that the wounds won't fester and the Clavamox is strong enough to do the trick!

...and for meowmy.

Glad Muffin is doing okay. My girlhood cat's name was Muffin and it always gives me a start to see your threads about him. My Muffin was a girl kitty.

How's the Muffin-man doing today? I sure hope the antibiotic is helping.
