A cat owning friend told me that there is mostly no "bad" wet cat food, unlike dry food. I've learned from here that dry food with byproducts or too much grain should be avoided. But is there a similar issue with some wet cat food products? I've tried Fancy Feast, IAMS, Friskies and Science Diet wet food with my ChooChoo and he likes them all.

Any hints on wet food?

In my opinion (and that is my opinion), the same rules in dry apply to wet - the only thing that makes different, and better, is that it has more moisture. And moisture in food is MUCH, MUCH better for the cat, since they are believed to no be good drinkers, and get most of their water from food. There is also a belief that the water is better utilized when consumed with the food, thus another advantage of wet food.
Dry food use binders to keep the kibbles together, so they are in general higher in carbs - although there are exceptions to the rule... EVO for example is extremely low in carbs, lower even than a lot of wet foods.
With so many choices in the market, you have the chance to choose both quality ingredients for wet and dry foods. I believe that the quality stands for both.
I do not feed By-products, period. Now I am feeding one grain, rice, due to the fact that one of my cat having recently been hit with an UTI. Grain-free foods are not really advisable for UTI prone cats...
You see, there are the general guidelines in grain, carbs, etc, but in the end it will come down to your cats' needs...

I allow by products in a wet food as the processing is different and the Isuue I mainly have with by products is the mystery of how much bone which is lessened in a wet food... see in a dry food the by product could be 50% or higher bone due to processing it would be hard to do in a wet food...

I do avoid grains above fifth ingrediant in a wet food as unlike the grain or starch in a dry food that helps keep it together there is no reason in a shredded or pate format wet food...

I avoid artificial flavors and colors in both... and chemical preservatives..

Read labels I found a grain free line , does have by products that are mostly named , veggie and starch free at my local grocery store for less than friskies
