It does seem silly, but technically you're sub-letting in that situation, i.e., taking on the role of landlord/landlady for your roommate if you're collecting rent, so the same laws would apply.

Rental laws can be incredibly complicated and easily infringed. For example, our state permits you to state that no dogs are allowed, but you can't forbid any pet that can be kept in a cage or aquarium, or up to two indoor-only cats. IME, ferrets can do a great deal more damage than dogs.

In our state, I see rental ads all the time that state, "No Pets".

Same here, but you can't say "No Children" even though kids can do much more damage than a cat.

I know! My brother was just looking at apartments, and one apartment didn't allow cats or dogs...."but you can have a caged animal, like a ferret or a rabbit". What?!?! I KNOW my ferrets have done far more damage than any of the cats or dogs. And the rabbits! They dig and pee and tear up the carpet. The apartment he chose does allow pets, including cats and dogs under 20 pounds, but you only need to put a deposit down for cats and dogs . My brother has a bird---a little green Quaker---and they said "birds are no problem!"---any bird! A macaw could take the apartment apart piece by piece if give the freedom to do so.

But it's nice that your state has laws against forbidding (most) pets. I wish that were true everywhere. There'd be a lot fewer pets in shelters.

slightly off topic.. Oh my the picture of a Macaw in a apartment is not pretty... I too have wondered about the whole caged vs uncaged thing... Many apartments have been flooded by aquariums and many evacuations due to loose snakes

Unless it's a hot, there's not reason to, though. People overreact.

I think the reason for cage vs uncage pets may be because liability and insurance - not just possible physical damage or noise within the apartment/rented home. Germany, for example, requires the pet owners to have insurance that covers injury, that's usually covered under our homeowners insurance (renters is a bit different).
...even more O/T.

Hot ? I do not understand?

Most of the ones I have been informed of were LARGE snakes( Imho to large for a typical person to have)... ie not a corn snake ... more the 10 ft python

I think "hot" is used by snake owners to refer to venomous snakes. . .

I wouldn't want to live somewhere with a 10-foot python on the loose, but it's unlikely a snake that large could go too far out of his own apartment. They can't wiggle through the small openings like a smaller snake could.

I've heard of aprtment complexes having hamster infestations. I guess any pet can become a problem if not properly cared for.

Hot is the term for venomous. Whenever someone talks about keeping vipers, rattlesnakes, adders, etc they'll call them hots. More random info for the night.

A 10 foot python isn't going to do much, unless you intentionally pick it up and wrap it around your neck. (much like other things that can kill you if you intentionally wrap them around your neck) You start getting up over that size, and because of weight (muscle) then you get a snake that's a bit risky to have if not handled properly at all times.
But when considering an escaped pet (of any kind but especially a herp) temp, dehydration, and starvation are eventually a problem. For reptiles common inside temps slow them down pretty quickly - when they're cold they can't eat much less attack anything.

really really O/T now, though everyone keep saying the same thing roommate wise. The woman advert was tasteless, somewhat illegal, but a waste of court time and money. Of course, it doesn't seem that outrageous after you hear of 4 years olds being sued for negligence.

I'll agree that the woman's advertisement was tasteless... but worth our time and money in courts? Not likely.

At least she posted it at the church with words like that.

Sadly it just sounds like a petty person stirred up a frivolous lawsuit.

A few yeas ago a python that size or smaller crawled into the crib of a 2 yr. old child and killed her. Never say never.
