Health concerns for my little one

Hm, if it's true that grain content in dry food may nullify Lysine, no wonder Tiggy's pink eye isn't getting much better...he seems to like a combination of wet and dry and has been (as my older cat Sasha has been) finicky with the wet (Sasha now seems to prefer Salmon Bisque while Tiggy seems to prefer the Chicken Stew...for now ).

I got a few sample packets of dry from Pet Value; one Taste of the Wild Rocky Mountain Feline Formula (no grain but very high in protein...I'm concerned that if my other, older cat Sasha develops a liking to it as well, it might be bad for his kidneys, and it has no Glucosamine which I feel is good for him, being a senior cat) and of Performatrin Ultra Slim Care Formula...which has Glucosamine, Chondrotinin, Carnitine; pre and probiotics...but isn't grain-free.

Is Taste of the Wild suitable for a 6 month-old kitten? Keep in mind he also gets wet (Performatrin Ultra Chicken stew). I can always use the Performatrin sample bag to get Sasha re-interested in his kibble by mixing it to his Royal Canin (a different issue - Sasha was sulky and refusing to eat...the Salmon bisque wet seems to have rekindled his appetite, knock on wood; but he's still ignoring his dry food...the wet doesn't have the 'senior cat nutrients' I'd like to see...).

Switching foods cold turkey is a mistake I've made in the past and won't repeat, so yes I will mix the new kibble to Tiggy's Science diet to make the change gradual.

Thanks in advance for your input!

We feed our 6 month old TOTW dry and he loves it! We also feed it to our 5 yo girl who has feline herpes. Our oldest cat has kidney issues, so she eats prescription food. She does get TOTW every now and again as a treat (1 morsel only). We feed EVO cat/kitten and a bit of the EVO venison to the 6 mo old as well.

Taste is VERY appropriate for the kitten...

Grain content and lysine have some correlation... but the so far they have not checked the potatoes and peas so common in grain frees for the same effect ... PS grain s have lysine in them, some very high other very low amounts

Older cats do better with grains.. Feel free to PM me ...

Cool, I was hoping to keep things simple; one common wet food (well they're both eating Performatrin Ultra...just different flavors, and served on a saucer they won't eat it if it's in a bowl! ) and one dry; but health issues prevent this, so be it, Sasha doesn't have kidney issues as of yet, I'm trying to keep things that way!

Thanks for the reply!

BTW, I've read up on Lysine cat treats; those would be more convenient to give Tiggy his Lysine than the Vet prescribed gel; but I have yet to find an online store that ships to Canada!

Since I have to give Lysine daily, twice a day, I use the powdered form. I buy the NOW brand. 1/4 teaspoon equals 500mg, so if Hannah's having a flare up she gets 1/4 t twice a day. If she's not having a flare up, then she gets half of the 1/4 t twice a day. This is what the bottle looks like: http://www.swansonvitamins.com/NWF252/ItemDetail . I usually find it on Amazon very reasonably, including shipping. The last time we found it on sale, I got 2 bottles.

I too supplement with lysine .. Using either Source natural s or Now.. Smart cats.. saucers aid in slower eating and less regurgitation

I tried that route, Amazon won't ship that product to Canada

Do you have a GNC or a Human supplement store? I noticed even the local grocery stores had it

Slim pickin' s as far as places that do ship to Canada...one site does but I'm looking at $36.50 shipping charges. I'd need to order $85.00 worth of merchandise to qualify for free shipping!

Mind you they do carry Lysine products:

Enisyl-F Lysine Treats (6.35 oz) - 11.99

Felisyl Immune System Support (3.5 oz) (powder) - 9.99

Viralys Gel (5 oz) - (same as what the Vet prescribed for Tiggy) - 8.99

And they also carry the Urine Off - 9.99

All good, but the shipping charges kill me!

Enisyl-F Lysine Treats (6.35 oz) - 11.99 This in a PASTE is what many vets sell for 45$ .. amazon had the paste for 15-20 depending on how many you bought... it is tasty and most of mine will eat off plate

Felisyl Immune System Support (3.5 oz) (powder) - 9.99 Can you link?

Viralys Gel (5 oz) - (same as what the Vet prescribed for Tiggy) - 8.99

Okay, found Lysine Capsules at a local Health Food store; paid about $10.00 for 90 500mg capsules...still cheaper than the Lysine Gel we got at the Vet. I started mixing in his gel with his wet food and he polished off his plate without a fuss

Before that I was feeding it to him with a small syringe...major fuss then. So I think I found the best way to give him his supplement, and I have more Lysine to mix into his food once the gel runs out.

Sasha on the other hand has eaten a bit of his wet and a bit of his kibble through the day; then again he sleeps most of the time, so I guess that's expected!
