Juan Williams fired by NPR - Page 3

With the budget cutting going on right now, predicting that anything will lose funding is akin to predicting that someday, it'll snow in Alaska.

The ongoing effects of the scandal continue to claim NPR executives.

Now 9 months after the fracas, Williams has a book out about it, called "Muzzled."

He was on the Diane Rehm show last week. She was the only NPR show that I know of (but I don't listen to all of them!) who interviewed him on her show right after the firing.

Original intervie with Juan Williams, October, 2010

Diane Rehm Show with Juan Williams

You can also download the podcast of the second broadast on i-Tunes, as I did, since I missed the first half when it was broadcast (hey, I have more to do than just "ride and guide"). A podcast of the first episode does not appear to be available, although you can listen to it online.

On this show, he was pretty gentle on most of the people at NPR, although he does maintain that there is a certain core element that can't stand debate and wants to discredit Fox News. I have heard (second-hand, not in a direct interview) that his wife is much harsher, accusing NPR of being racist and elitist at the highest levels. Since Williams was the only black male on air there, she may feel justified in those beliefs.

I also did not know that he apparently had done some work for Fox before he ever went to work at NPR.

Ah, you've lost me there (bold mine). NPR racist?? Come on now, NPR is the only news source I know of that is colorblind/religion blind/class blind. I listen everyday for years and years now. Do you? Have you? Do you blame them for calling out the FOX franchise (the mouthpiece of the conservative anti-gay, anti-woman, anti-poor, anti-minority, anti- anything but $$ and corporations) ?

Ah...and do YOU listen/watch Fox? I don't think I said anything about NPR that was my own invention. Have you listened to the two Williams interviews? Do you realize that Fox has more on-air personalities of color than NPR...which currently has none?

Actually, I DO listen to NPR quite a lot. And I'm not surprised some would be offended at Mrs. Williams' accusations. I haven't read the book; I just heard that mentioned in discussion of it, etc. Have you considered that she might just have it right? After all, even NPR fired the VP and CEO responsible for Williams' firing.

I'm not saying that Fox doesn't have a viewpoint, just that it's no more obvious than MSNBC or NPR. Jon Stewart and Juan Williams got it right in their conversation; most people find an outlet that matches their viewpoint and stick with it, although polls have shown Fox is pretty popular with people from all political bents.

I have to agree on this one. Our perception of every network comes from it's "face", it's newsroom or studio. We don't have the access to the "inner workings" or higher echelons, and really should keep an open mind for the statements from people that have been behind those doors.

Juan Williams was on "Forum" on NPR this week. His hour there was very interesting. Among other things, he says that anyone who listens exclusively to NPR and doesn't watch/listen to Fox is as misinformed as someone who watches Fox exclusively and refuses to watch MSNBC or listen to NPR.

Of course, he makes the opposite point: Those whose views are formed or echoed by one of those and causes them to exclude the other is poorly informed, and he made the point forcefully that many Fox viewers fall in that category.
