I went to Petco yesterday to get Nora some wet food to try again to see if she'll take to it. She did when she was a kitten, but out of nowhere stopped eating it and I haven't been able to get her to take it since then. She currently eats Solid Gold Indigo Moon (I prefer Core but SG is MUCH cheaper). I noticed they had a new type of canned food, made by Merrick, that they didn't used to carry. I just got a couple of cans b/c I wasn't sure what style of food it was (she used to only eat pate, won't eat anything chunky), plus I got a couple of cans of the Before Grain, in beef, chicken, and chicken and quail.

Does anyone have any opinions on the Merrick? She seems to LOVE it! I was surprised! It is somewhat chunky, but chunks in pate it seems. I just smashed up all the chunks so it was all the same consistency and added some water. She likes the added water for extra gravy, it seems. She ate all of the 1/2 small can I gave her, both times. I started with the Turducken. Next will be Cowboy Cookout.

They seem okay to me, but I'm not a pro. I'm not worried about the small amount of grain in some of them b/c I think she needs a bit that I can control. I'm just happy she likes it. We'll see in a couple of days if she likes the BG, and maybe I'll try picking up a couple different flavors of the Merrick.

Thanks for any advice!

solid food .. reception to the ever changing formulas and concitancy of a couple years ago is why I do not buy much unless it is a super sale

I'm actually trying out Merrick, as well. I'm trying to get Tony to transition to a more wet-food based diet and so far, Merrick is the one he likes most.

He LOVES Cowboy Cookout. I read somewhere this particular variety has the same amount of protein as an entire mouse! I also have the Chicken and Quail B.G. flavor to try with him. Whichever he likes most, I'll buy a big case of. I also want to make sure his stool is okay after about a week or so.

Let me know how it goes with you and I'll update you on my findings!

It is one of the many canned foods in my rotation. They like Turducken, Cowboy Cookout, Grammy's Pot Pie, & Thanksgiving Day Dinner. Surf & Turf, as well as Southern Delight are sometimes like, sometimes snubbed.

As a human, I love the way this label reads. And the price is good.

However, I could not get my kitties to eat it. They turned their nose right up at it. Although, I didn't think to mash it up and mix it with water to make it all the same consistency. They seemed to hate the chunks and clearly visible bits. I might try that with the last can I have and see if they budge!

My boys ate it for a little while mixed with lesser Q foods. They like the BG beef ... I mix it with Fancy Feast for added incentive!

The most important thing is that Nora likes it and will eat it.

Your Petco has Merrick? this must be a relatively new thing... I do not have a Petco in my town thus do not regularly go there

My Petco has it, too. I'm in California. It is very new. They began stocking it less than a month ago. Merrick at Petco is more expensive than the ones sold at the feed store that I frequent. I think it hovers around $2.00/5oz.

My cat is the same way. Some days he'll tolerate it and eat a bite or two. Other days he'll refuse it. I have had to throw away many a good Merrick cans.

I know it's good food so I try to have a can or two in stock and hope for the best. I like Merrick. The smell is not offensive and it just has a "cleaner" look to it than other "premium" wet foods like Evo.

My guys LOVE it - I usually stick to beef, chicken and the Chicken/Quail in BG - we rotate between Wellness, Blue Buffalo, Natural Balance, Merrick, BG and Max Cat.

My cats don't like the turkey canned foods (of any kind), so I make sure there is no turkey in the flavors.

We pay $1.39 and $1.49 for Merrick and BG - same as the Wellness/Natural Balance. I save money by throwing in the chicken/lamb in Max Cat ($.89)

Both our cats love the beef and chicken flavours (not seafood) but at $1.99 per can plus tax (15%), it is just too expensive.

I like it because it is a quality food.

Ouch!
At that price, I'd have to agree with you that's just too $$!

If you're ever up in Ottawa, a pet store called The Pampered Pet, carries the Merrick, 5 oz, for $1.79...with the 13% tax.

My fellow likes it too, the Turducken flavour.

Even at 1.79 a can it's pretty expensive when you are feeding 2. It was $1.69 in the Guelph are where I used to live.

I bought ours at Petco also.

For the record, I bought a few different flavors to see if she would like any of them, and she would only eat the plain chicken B.G. She wouldn't eat any of the other flavors of B.G. or any of the ones like Cowboy Cookout, etc. She turned up her nose and wouldn't even try them, and they just went to waste. *sigh*

That's such a shame to waste cat food. Sometimes if my fellow won't eat one kind...I'll mix just a touch of it into a more favoured food...he doesn't seem to notice. I'll do this until the unwanted food is eaten up.

Of course, I can also feed it to the outdoor cats...believe me, they don't turn their noses up at anything...

We don't seem to have any outdoor cats around here, not that I've seen anyway.

Nora is VERY picky, and if we tried to mix it with something else she still wouldn't eat it b/c she would smell it. It sucks to waste it, but we didn't have anything else to do with it, and I'm certainly not going to eat it. lol

we got a couple cans recently and Samara ate the first 2 and loved them(grammy's pot pie) the 3rd can i opened today was the same formula bit a different consistency and Samara snubbed it. But Samara really hasn't snubbed a food really besides 1/2 a can of natural life, but she ate the other half fine. Maybe it was the consistency your baby didn't like.

i was feeding the non-BG flavors to my foster kittens (grammy's pot-pie, etc.), but after about 2 weeks, it started to make 1 of them continuously throw up. it wasn't an issue with eating too fast, as he would puke an entire 6 or so hours later, where you could see he had started the digestive process ... initially we thought it was the dry food as we had just switched over to spot's stew (what my regulars eat) -- but it did end up being the canned as he immediately stopped when i switched the brand. for the record, it was *every* single flavor -- fish, beef, turkey ... anyone else had this issue? just curious.

Merrick is pretty good. I usually stick to Wellness grain-free canned, it's a good price for the big cans and my senior cat likes it (she also likes the Merrick Grammy's Pot Pie.) I haven't been buying either one lately though because it's hard to keep my allergy cat from sneaking some, so I've only been giving foods to my other cats that are ok if he eats them too.
