Good Morning folks, at 8am today I got a phone call regarding a job my 14yr old daughter applied for, and she got it

which leads us to todays question:

How old were you for your first job, and what was it? How long did you last at it?

16 and I was a lifeguard at the local pool. It only lasted about 3 months because that was the summer my parents divorced and my mom had to put a PFA out against my dad for her and I so I missed the last few weeks of my job and the first 2 weeks of school because my dad refused to leave the house and it was closer than 100 yds from the house to the school and pool.

I was 15 when I started as a kitchen "slave" in the hospital. My dad worked there and he got me the job part time after school and on weekends for about three hours a day. It gave me some spending money. I think I stayed there for about two years because I know there were times when DH had to bring me to work as, at that time, we only had one car.

I started babysitting somewhere around 12 or 13. My first real job was when I turned 16 (like 2 weeks after!) I made $1.80/hour, working at Ponderosa Steak house. I kept it about a year and a half, and only left it to start working at Wendy's, when they opened a new restaurant in town.

19. I was an Assistant Teacher at a Child Development Center For (what at that time was called) Mentally Retarded Children. I hated the job. It was my first and last job and it lasted about six years.

I started bbsitting when I was 10....

Didn't get my first "paycheque" job till i was 22 or so when I went to work as a cook/dishwasher. I kept it till I moved towns.

Got my second job in Aug. 2004, which was the job that "injured" me

Yup, I've only had 2 jobs aside from bbsitting and I am 33yrs old.

I was 16 when I landed a job at our phone co. I was an information operator, the person who gives out numbers. At that time you actually used a phone book which I was surrounded with by Cities. I think I lasted a year, it was a very demanding job and I had to work holidays and split shifts plus I was still in school.

I was 14 and the job was to tutor math and English to what we then called disadvantaged kids. I don't know what the politically correct term is today but that is what we used back in President Johnson's Great Society days. I earned minimum wage of $1.75 and I felt like I was rich.

Babysitting, when I was about 12. Then, when I turned 16, I got a job as a bus-girl at The Camelot, which was sort of a unique place at the time - built to look like a castle, and with little rooms that looked like rooms in a castle. It was sort of fun.

My first job was working Sunday and Wendesday nights at church in the nursery with the babies when I was around 13 years old. I loved it; it gave me my own spending money (min. wage, but hey....it was money!) and allowed me to help out my mom with bills when times were tough. I think that starting a job at such a young age taught me a lot about responsibility and feeling a sense of accomplishment for the things I had earned.
I did that job until I was 18 (at that point I was working multiple jobs and decided to go with the ones that paid more while I was in school). It was a good learning experience and it also got me a lot of work on the side as well as a private nanny. Another positive to that job was that I learned how to manage my time well between work, school/homework, music, and sports. It taught me how to keep a schedule and how to be responsible.

I would definitely let your daughter try out the new job if you think she's ready!

I was 14. I worked at a local amusement park, operating the rides. It was a summer job, so I only worked there for a few months. I HATED it.

For sure.

She's been "dying" for a cellphone, and we meanie parents are not the type to foot the bill for a teen's phone, our agreement is simple: IF she can pay the monthly bill w/o dipping into savings, we will co-sign on a contract ( you get a free phone that way) for her.

She's been eagerly awaiting her first "steady income" job, and is quite responsible for her age

Her only downfall is time management. She tends to wait till the last min. to complete some things, so I do see this as a lesson in balancing homework/ part time job/ home chores/ cadets.

I'm surprised there hasn't been more newspaper deliverers.

Around here thats the first job a teen can get.... The legal working age here is 14, except when it comes to babysitting.

I got my first job when I was 16. The school district that I went to had early childhood centers at most of their elementary schools and they offered after school part time positions to the high school students. I worked with Toddlers. I worked there for about a semester, but then my mom made me quit b/c my grades weren't very good. I loved it there.

I also started working part time at a nursery and garden center (Earl May if anyone knows of it) at about the same time. My mom was the wholesale manager there and got me the job. I worked there for over 4 years until I got pregnant with my son and had such horrible morning sickness that I couldn't stand up or walk and was forced to quit.

Congrats to your daughter!!

We're meanie parents also! LOL Greyson has been informed that he will not be given a cell phone until he can drive ALONE, which means at least 16. He hates it b/c he sees his cousins who are the same age that have cell phones, as do a bunch of his friends. Oh well. We also won't let him have a facebook acct until he's 13, which is the required age. We're big bullies. HAHA
