I have an 8 yr old domestic shorthair, neutered cat named Pumpkin. I will try to include as much detail as possible. We live in Southern California near the foothills in Claremont.

For the past few months he has had an allergic reaction to something. I don't know what it is. He will start vomiting and his face will swell up. This began around April or May of this year and it happens about once a month.

Last week I took him into the emergency vet because he continued to vomit and his ears were red. His retching and vomiting stopped the minute I put him in the cat carrier. The vet in that case gave him an injection for the nausea. He recovered quickly.

Last night I had to take him in again, same symptoms, vomiting and facial swelling. Emergency vet said he is likely getting bitten by something but I see no puncture marks like from a spider or a sting from an insect. I've also seen him eat spiders with no ill effect.

We've had alot of ants recently which I have under control. But there are still a few here and there. He could be eating them I suppose. They are the small brown house ants. I don't think they bite and I'm unsure if they cause allergies.

I also fed him a bit of canned food that has guar gum in it (Blue buffalo wilderness salmon) I put some olive oil in it for hairball control. I read online that Guar gum may cause an allergic reaction in some cats.

So I know this is long. I wonder if anyone has had experience with this and how they solved the issue. I cannot afford to keep running to the vet. I NEED to figure out and quick what his issue is.

Other info. He is never lethargic during these episodes and he NEVER has problems breathing. There is no blood in his stool or vomit when it happens. just food and then as it continues it's a yellow liquid. He also has regular stools with no problems with constipation or diarrhea.

PLEASE HELP. need advice quick

How long of the current food? is is just wet or wet and dry ?

I had a dog in anaphaltic shock due to a spider bite, the vet said she could be bitten by the exact same spider at another time and not react at all...

Yes liquid is BILE..

Has a senior blood panel been done?

He is on canned only as an occasional treat. I fed him that last week prior to last weeks episode. also with a little olive oil in it.

I haven't been buying that brand of canned food long. just for the last 3 weeks. And he doesn't get it every day.

His regular food is dry. I feed Blue Buffalo high protein Wilderness chicken. I switched him gradually about a month ago from Science Diet light, dry hairball formula because I keep reading stuff about corn and its freaking me out.

Last week the Vet took X rays and the doctor said kidneys liver, bladder and intestines looked normal. He also said he seemed to be a "pretty stable kitty." But I couldn't afford x rays and blood panel too.

I do understand the $$$ adds up... As soon as you can get a senior panel done..

At 8 he is a senior cat ... and even My masters in animal nutrition vet advises against the HIGH protein no grains( yes there are some no grains that she thinks are fine... She also pulls back on the amount of raw she feeds as it is usually out of balance to the needs of this age group... WET food is fine in no grain due to moisture content..

Note : corn is NOT bad , not the best for some cats and not something I prefer to feed

I am going to look up the % of SD light ... it could just be you moved to a food that is too "rich" for him

Guar gum is a uncommon allergy

is he an indoor only cat?

i'd start tracking his food daily and note when he has a reaction. and see if you can find a link.

i started doing that when one of my cat scratched herself bald under her chin. i'd been rotating different food and noted she has reactions from 2 diff type. so i'm trying to find some common ingredients between the two...

He is 100 percent indoor only. And thanks so much for the responses. He started having these swelling reactions a few months before I switched him to a high protein food. So I don't know if the dry is an issue. But it could be.
