Annoyingly affectionate

I thought cats were supposed to be very independent animals, who need very little maintenance. I love her dearly, but Misha is annoyingly affectionate. I can't get a moment's rest. If I don't have a hand on her at all times, she meows and meows and meows! How can I help promote independance in this little kitty?

Thanks,
M

"Annoyingly" and "affectionate" are two words that don't go together. I'm wondering why you got a pet in the first place?

Yes, it is a fallacy that cats are "independent" and "low maintenance". Cats are living feeling emotional beings who need companionship and socialization just like any other creature.

Some cats are very talky, it's just their nature, and there isn't anything you can do about that. A feliway plug in diffuser may help a little, if she is feeling insecure.

But the neediness can be addressed depending on certain things:

How much time is Misha alone each day?

How much one on one attention do you give to Misha?

How often do you play with her, and for how long?

How often do you groom her?

How much do you talk to her?

I feel your pain.Franklin was my first cat. He spent about 10 hours a day, m-f, by himself. When I was home it was like having a Velcro cat. Everywhere I went, everything I did, That little boy was stuck to me. In the morning I could hear him wailing all the way to the elevator. My solution was a second cat. Franny has worked out well for both of us. I don;t know whether or not that's an option for you, but it can be a big help.

All cats are different and each one has their own unique personalities. I have some that are very independant, prefering to do their own thing while others and SUPER affectionate and always want to be with/around me. It sounds to me like maybe your kitty is bored. Do you have lots of toys for her? Maybe a cat tree for her to lounge/play on? Maybe she needs another kitty friend to play and interact with, especially if you are out of the house the majority of the day.

For me personally though, a cat can NEVER be too affectionate. Your kitty obviously loves you. Enjoy it!

I know what you mean. Seti demands a lot of my attention. I adore him but I do have to work! I work from home so I'm with him a lot and scraping him off my desk so I can get to my papers gets old. Like Kyle suggested, my other cats help draw some of his attention away from me. As he's aged, he's gotten less needy and that's helped. For the rest of the time, I enjoy that he and I can do stuff that I can't do with the other cats. We like to chase each other around the house!

How old is your cat??? Is she spayed? Is this a new bahavior??? First thing that came to my mind is that maybe she's in heat????

That's what I thought too immediately upon reading the OP.
Two days after I adopted Ritz--a barely socialized, formerly feral cat--she started become really affectionate. It's a miracle! I thought. Um, no.... turned out she was in heat and since I was the only warm body around, she turned ALL of her attention and interest onto me.
