Can anyone help????
My cat Mossy is 1 and a half. She had her 1st litter of kittens at the start of June this year.
It was always my intention to keep one of her kittens as i wanted another cat and I thought (at the time ) that keeping one of her babies was a much better idea than buying a new kitten and trying to introduce it in to our home.

She had a litter of 3 kittens, the birth was fine (no complications) and she was a fantastic 1st time mum.
We re-homed 2 of the kittens after 12 weeks as planned and we have had Mossy spayed. Everything was fine for a few weeks but Mossy started spending more and more time out of the house, It has gotten to the point now when she only comes in to eat... when she is in she growls, hisses and swipes at the kitten.
She is fine and affectionate when she is out of the house and away from the kitten but she is tense and nasty when she is indoors with the kitten. We let the kitten out for the 1st time the other day as I thought it might ease the tension but Mossy attacked her outside too.

I fully appreciate that after having kittens and being spayed that her hormones will be all over the place. And after doing reserch i have come to understand that her behaviour towards the kitten is unfortunatuly quite normal.....
.... I was just wondering if there is anything i can do!? I love Mossy and the kitten so much and really don't want it to come to me having to rehome one of them... i just cant see a way out of this. Will it get better in time!? Will she ever except the kitten?
Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

And what about the kitten? Has it been spay/neutered yet? If not, get that done before you let it outside. If your kitten is still younger (4-6 months) I wouldn't even let it outside by itself, yet, even if it had been altered already.

You need to try to get a product called Feliway. The diffusers are better than the spray, though they do cost more. You'll have to make sure to get enough to cover all of your home with.
You could try reintroducing them slowly and using natural vanilla to confuse their scents so they smell the same. Here's a thread on introducing cats, there's also a link to an article there that you should read over. You may pick up some tips that will help.

Ultimately though, it's going to take time. Time for everyone to accept that this is who will live in the household and that no one needs to fight over territory/food.

The kitten is a female, not spayed. She was on a kitten lead not actually out by herself.

Thanks for the tips, I will certainly give the feliway a go

I think it will probably go better once the kitten is spayed. For some reason, at least in my house, females fight over territory a lot more than males.

I once had a queen-of-the-house cat, and got a female kitten, and the first cat was soooooooooo mad. She wouldn't even "talk" to us. She would make sure we were looking at her, then sit with her back toward us. And she was so mean to the kitten. But after a couple months they were sleeping together and washing each other.

Female cats are a bit like women, I think. You put a couple of them in a smaller space together (say an apartment) and they'll eventually step on each other toes and fight (verbally, of course), then hold a grudge over the whole ordeal for a while.

It actually pops up as an issue in households with more than one female dog, too. It's well know that with the more tenacious terrier breeds, there's a greater possibility of two spay females fighting than there is of two neutered males.

Luckily if you can take hormones out of the mix with cats, they can usually work something out with time.
