Hello everyone.

My name is Michael and I live in Iowa. I've loved cats since I was a little boy. My father was never very excited about them and so we only had one or two here and there, unless one of them got pregnant.

As an adult, out on my own, I finally had a chance to have my own cats. First I took my family cat Max, and later adopted Bob from my sister. After that came Mureas. For quite a while that was all that I had. Eventually Max fell ill and died though. It was a pretty bad Thanksgiving day.... Perhaps a year or two later my girlfriend and I found a feral female wandering around our neighborhood. She looked Siamese and was very friendly. She had two adorable kittens with her which we instantly were in love with. We were hesitant to take them in, but the mother left them in our yard for several days without returning. So we took them in and the male was named Sargeant, and the female Elora.

That left us with 4 cats, and we did not think we'd ever end up expanding beyond that. We simply had no idea how many beautiful feral cats were wandering our area though. Eventually the mother cat returned, very pregnant and in need of care. So we took her in, and she had 5 more children. Those all turned out really well and we adopted out 3 of them to friends.

After that we had 7 cats and were starting to feel the pressure. We also had feral cats coming up to our door and following us around. It tugs at my heart strings to see them starving and unwanted. It hurts me to see them laying dead by the road nearby(a 45mph zone that people fly through at 60-70 on a regular basis). So after refusing them entry for months and months, we finally ended up taking in another feral mother and babies when we nearly ran them over one night on that same road. The father cat also showed up not long before that near death and in need of help. So we had him too.

So as you can see, my love of cats has gotten us into quite a bad situation. We don't socialize all that much because of bad experiences we've had with some people in the past, and that's made it hard to find homes for these cats. Worse yet, we cannot afford to spay or neuter any of these cats due to losing our jobs. I feel kinda trapped by my love of cats sometimes.... The local "Humane" society will kill these cats if I take them there. I'm very familiar with the place and I know for a fact that "colony" cats get death every time, and no attempt is made to place them. All the no kill shelters in the area are totally broke and can't help. We've had to turn away a lot of cats as it is. That's very hard since we see so many really beautiful animals around here just starving to death. The change from the old garbage cans to the new, more secure ones, has also killed a lot of domestic strays for lack of food. Our society denies even the scraps from our tables to these creatures.

I'm not writing this to give you a sob story, but rather to illustrate how I reached the conclusion I have. I've come to see that the problem of feral cats is huge beyond belief. It's more than we can ever even scratch the surface of. It's pathetic that in an area with so much, domestic strays are given so little thought or funding. So what these animals really need isn't cash donations, and it isn't volunteers(though both of those things are commendable). What they really need is a sustainable solution, so that funds can continually be raised for their care and for educating the public about their plight.

To that end, I am interested in starting a company, and indeed a movement, for the purpose of raising sustainable funding for animals in need. I have a lot of experience in the scrap metal and recycling field, and have come to realize that is where the solution lies. So many things which are perceived as garbage to the average American are in fact usable and salable materials. The main problem is they need to be broken down into separate collections. The copper, iron, rubber, plastic, aluminum, glass, etc. all need to be separated and gathered in enough bulk. In sufficient quantities, these materials change from being garbage to being worth money. A lot of these things are not worth breaking down if a company has to pay for them though. Oddly, this is exactly what makes them so perfect for use in helping animals. Many of these materials have to be thrown in the trash because, without huge quantities, no recycling company will pay for them. The companies also generally consider the labor to be too much to suit their desired profit margins.

So if we can figure out how to get our business going, and get pet rescue groups, and pet lovers in general to participate, we can get donations of what is otherwise junk, and refine it into something that can be sold. Then a share of that income can be diverted to helping pay for no-kill operations, and related education. I'd also like to educate the public on the negatives of declawing.

Many items just laying in the ditch actually injure stray animals, and these same items are potentially things that can raise money to save them. Two benefits in one. It also means less junk going to landfills, and foreign materials becoming a local resource. There's so many positives to this idea, I think if I had any sort of money, it would already be saving animals and cleaning up the environment.

That's my situation, and my dream. I'm trying to make a website for all this. I'm also trying to find online communities like this one. Just reaching out to the world in hopes of some positive change. I'd like to make friends with some good people for a change too, but first and foremost I want to help the cats. I don't ask for much in life anymore, but this is one thing that is very dear to me. There's a lot more to me, and this idea than one post can cover easily. I suppose I will wait for some feedback before I post more of it. Thanks to those who read this far though.

Hi there Michael!
You and your girlfriend obviously have very big hearts. My boyfriend and I are also very involved with fostering and helping cats in need, but we do so through the local shelter as well as a TNR organization.
Your idea sounds wonderful! I certainly hope that you are able to get the company off the ground and are able to help all of those babies who obviously need you. I hope you enjoy your time here at TCS.

Thanks for the welcome. I can tell by your signature image that you are of like mind! Some people look at me like I'm crazy when I can list all their names. Well they aren't cattle to us, they're our cute little friends(and naughty ones too). I wish I had a great picture of them like you do. That's so fun!

That's great to see you're able to work with your shelter. I wish our area was more receptive to such things. If we had a good shelter around here I'd help get a lot of these strays off the street. They want us to trap them, but I know that trapping them = killing them 100% of the time here. They lie so bad about that here. Hopefully the future will become more positive, but we'll see. I am just happy to see some people really doing their part. I have a feeling that just about anyone who comes to a board like this understands what we're up against. If I ever rant about "people", I don't mean the people on this board!

I'll try to get some pictures up so you can see some of the beauties we've saved. Just so much on the to do list....

Most of the images are on my old computer which I haven't recovered yet. I do have a couple pictures of two of the kitties that need homes. They are the 2 survivors out of a litter of 5. Their parents, Momba, and Thor, are awesome, loving cats who showed up at our house stray and won us over. Both of these cats are really sweet. Bear has something odd going on with his eyes currently(almost looks like some kind of worms in there), but we can't afford to get vet care for every stray that shows up unfortunately

They are a bit bigger since these pictures, but they're just as cute.

Also, here's a picture of a couple we rescued as babies. They're now all grown up, but I can't get to those pictures just this second.

Here's Sargent Maynard:

and here is is sister Elora Dannon:

Here is Bob(left) and Max(Right.... RIP)

Bob again and Mureas(on the left)

Had to include this one of Bob being absurdly cute:

I'll get some updated ones of Sarge and Elora(plus their younger siblings) when I get a chance.

OMG look at your babies!

Your Bob looks SO MUCH LIKE our Tuxedo (yes, that's his name) it's amazing! And I don't mean because they're B&W - I mean the "look" - the attitude - his build, AND the markings.

Welcome to TCS!

I LOVE your dream! I hope you're able to realize it!!!!!

If you want to learn more about other efforts out there - maybe work on getting your town to sponsor low-cost spay/neuter, or support trap-neuter-return programs, we can help you with all kinds of links to information there too.
I'm sure it'll help you two to feel like you're part of a larger community, and not just out there on your own.

If you're not already familiar, these are great resources:

Welcome to TCS Michael! You're not alone in "higher numbers" of cats - I have 18 cats total, 10 indoor cats & 8 outdoor/farm cats (all are S/N). Many are rescues, several were scheduled to be euthanized.

I'm all too familiar with the "trap the ferals" - I volunteer at the local/rural humane society here & we do often end up euthanizing ferals (we fix them & send them to farms right away if we have the funds to do so & a farm lined up for immediate relocation).

As far as fixing the kitties you have, have you spoke to area vet clinics to see if any of them would be willing to work with you to get them fixed? I know you said you're both unemployed, so I know it's hard to find any extra income - but it's just food for thought.

If nothing else, have you spoke to the vet clinics about putting up flyers/posters for some of the kitties you have in need of homes? Or to see if they know of anyone looking to adopt? Have you reached out to shelters/TNR groups outside your area for assistance? Laurie provided some good links that will hopefully be of help. And of course browse the forums, you never know what useful info you may find.

And have you browsed Petfinder to find rescues in your area that may be able to help with TNR or know of someone who can help with the TNR?

http://www.petfinder.com

And do go specifically here at Alley Cat Allies - fill in the form to have them send you the Feral Friends in your area (if there are any!). (This is in the "Make Connections" section of "What We Do"). http://www.alleycat.org/NetCommunity/Page.aspx?pid=444

...And it wouldn't hurt to join the local (State) forums of Best Friends No More Homeless Pets campaign to see if you can network with anyone around you.

Welcome to the site and bless you for taking care of all these cats. They are adorable.

I really admire your vision and hope that some of the site links give you some inspiration to accomplish it.

Thanks for all the replies. Been a lot going on lately so I haven't been able to reply as quickly as I had hoped. I really need to get some files off my old hard drive. I had a lot more pictures of our babies. You'll flip when you see these Siamese!

I loved the Stray Pet Advocacy page. What a neat project! I will definitely link people to it from my site once I get things going. I'm really glad to see the anti-declawing literature on there. It makes me sad how common finger mutilation is. Our babies destroy some of our stuff, but I figure all things are impermanent and it's just motivation for change.

Anyway, I'm pretty frustrated about the situation with Momba and Thor. We care for these two strays. Thor entered our lives a couple years ago. He started following us on our walks around the neighborhood. He was clearly starving to death and we felt so bad that he was using what little energy he had to follow us like a kitten. He would disappear for long periods of time and then suddenly one day he showed up with massive injuries to his neck. So I saved his life and then he vanished again. Then this beautiful black and white female started living around our porch, and he showed up again. The two of them were clearly the best of friends. Soon she had two gray babies with her as well, and it was obvious they were his(he is gray and white). He would stay on the porch and guard the food we put out. He always made sure the babies and Momba got to eat first, and then after he was done he'd let the other strays in the neighborhood up on the porch to eat. He's always been such a good alpha, and he's totally a lap cat. If I even so much as squat down he's trying to get on my lap. Momba is so friendly too. The babies they made have been nothing but awesome.

Sadly though, Momba has something wrong with her and when she has babies, most of them die. We can't afford to get her fixed, and she's not really our pet. We do not have adequate area to house her either, so she has come and gone a few times. This time though I think she's pregnant again. I just don't know that I can handle more dead kittens. I really want to get her shots, and then get her fixed after she has the babies, but I doubt we'll be able to afford it any time soon. Our financial situation has really gone downhill, and there's been some serious health problems here.

Maybe it's crazy of me, but I'd really like to find Thor and Momba a home together. People don't want adults though. Everyone seems to want a tiny little kitten. These are two of the best cats I've ever encountered in terms of personality, but we just can't handle them. It also makes it hard to adopt out cats when one is fervently anti-declawing. Hopefully though I can get their profiles up on the website soon, and maybe I can get some interest from someone who has better resources to care for them than we do. I really wish we had a no kill around here that would take them.

On a brighter note, I put an ad in a local swap sheet asking for scrap metal for pet rescue. We'll see how that goes. Maybe I can raise funds that way to get this started. I wish I had this plan a year ago when I had money and better health! Still, things are how they are. We'll see.
