Red ears, not allergies?

After a terrifying few weeks with an unknown illness (low white blood cells, liver issues, intestinal inflammation), Liz started to pull through last week. She was perky and all but back to normal. (She's still on flagyl, and prednisone, but last week they took her off amoxi-drops.)

However, over the weekend, her ears and the bald spot between her eyes and ears started to get warm and red. I took her to the vet today for what was supposed to be another "wow, we're so amazed you cat is bouncing right back!" visit, but instead we were faced with another mysterious issue.

Her temp was up to 102.-something (I can't recall, but it was enough the vet said it was in fever territory). The vet said that with any "normal" cat, looking at her symptoms, she'd think "allergies" and prescribe prednisone. But, because she's already on prednisone, no allergies should even be presenting themselves.

She said it could be mites and that perhaps she's always had them and with her immune system so low lately, they're affecting her so strongly now. The vet put her back on amoxi-drops for the fever and they gave her some Revolution flea treatment behind her head, and said that ivermectin may be an option, but she would have to consult with an internist to see if, with her original mystery illness, and the meds she's on, that is a safe option.

I'm keeping an eye on her tonight and she seems engaged (plays with toys I dangle in front of her), but she's definitely lost some fire in her. I just want to crumble. I'm kicking myself for letting myself get so optimistic that she was almost well -- but I don't think it was misplaced optimism. Everything looked great last week, so I'm crushed that we're dealing with this now.

I know that her issues are very unique and that every cat is different, but has any of you experienced something like this before? I'm so frustrated, confused, crushed, numb, etc.
