OK, here's the background. I have had my cat for about 5 weeks, and he is one and a half years old. He used to be friendly/curious towards other animals. My roommate's girlfriend's cat stayed with us while she moved apartments, and they got along well until my cat had to go to the vet. Afterward, the other cat attacked him and he started getting scared a lot and running under my bed, which he never did.
Now I got a new kitten, 2 months old, to keep him and me company, but my old cat is acting like this new kitten is godzilla. I opened the door to the room the kitten is in, the kitten came out less than a foot, and my other cat hissed, and ran away! I'm trying to socialize the two as best I can becaus the kitten wants out of his romo, and he always makes a b-line straight to my other cat, who ends up hissing and scaring this little kitten.
I was thinking about introducing them to each other with some talcum powder on them to mask different smells. Any ideas on how successful this might be? I also read that you need to use a tiny bit, and everyone is emphasizing TINY AMOUNT. My question is, how much is the correct amount? I definitely don't want to screw up any lung or nasal functions, but I also need to acclimate these two quickly, or my new kitten is going to end up spending all of his time in my roommate's bedroom (where we keep him now)
Also, if there is something else I can use to mask their smells and get them to be more amiable, I am all ears. I have only heard talcum powder and nothing else, so a safer alternative would be appreciated!
