A couple days ago I found 2 fleas on Jericho so we decided to nip it in the butt before we got infested and bought some carpet and upholstery powder, shampoo, and Zodiac Bio Spot. Everything was fine until I used the Bio Spot. It did not stay in the area I applied it to, instead in ran all down the sides of his neck and all down his back. So he, like any cat, felt a wet spot and started licking. He then started making horrible faces and gagging and wouldnt eat or drink anything. So I called the number on the box and it connected me to ASPCA poison control, and a women answered who referred to herself as a doctor, I explained what was going on and she said hes fine he just doesnt like the taste.
Now Jericho is about 6lbs, and is 4 months old. The box says to use on cats 12 weeks and older that weigh more than 5lbs, so I figured it would be fine. I then started researching the product and found horrible reviews. Others cats had experienced anything from hair loss and burning and scaring of the skin to convulsions and death. And even though it says for cats and kittens (over 5lbs and over 12 weeks old) I found online that it is usually ok on grown cats but younger small pound cats cannot handle the toxins. So I immediately rushed Jericho to the sink and washed him thoroughly to make sure all the Bio Spot was off. Afterwards he went to sleep like nothing had happened, and this morning he was fine, so I think we caught it soon enough.

What Im wondering is if there are any home remedies for fleas? Im far too scared to use any pesticides on him at such a young age. I read that vinegar and garlic help keep fleas away, but Im afraid to even try that. My main concern is keeping him flea free and safe and healthy at the same time. Any help would be wonderful!

You can use garlic but it's such a small dose that it's hard to get. I know that it's 2mg for small dogs, you can get the pills that small in the UK but not here that I've found (Canada). I believe they're starting to show up in the states a bit but I haven't been there in awhile so I haven't been able to check.

You can dilute tea tree oil, I think it's 1:10 with water and spray it on him, or give him a bath and add a drop to the shampoo.

Also bathing in original Dawn (the blue kind) will kill fleas and they'll wash right off.

I know cats hate citrus, but you can boil some lemons in water, allow it to cool and then spray it on him. It's supposed to be good for fleas, I use it with my dogs as a preventative sometimes.

You can also get DE from garden stores - just make sure it's the food grade one NOT the one for pools - sprinkle it on him and try to leave it for awhile, then brush it off or vacuum him if you can, lol. You can also use that in your house and do the same thing, it works great and it's safe for pets.

1. No online advice can replace direct veterinary intervention. If you suspect that your cat may be ill, please contact your vet immediately. You are welcome to look for advice in the health forum while waiting for that appointment, but never delay proper veterinary care waiting for Internet advice. Remember that cats, and especially kittens, are very adept in keeping pain to themselves and delaying treatment may cause irreversible damage.

Garlic is TOXIC to cats and should ONLY be used under direct vet supervision( by a vet well trained in western herbal medicine...

Tea tree IS also TOXIC to cats... Do NOT use it in any amount without direct vet supervision...

Dawn Does NOT kill them just stuns them giving time to remove them..

DE that is FOOD grade can help ....

BUT to Riff PLEASE take this cat to the vet ... OTC flea stuff can and has killed... I hope you were not charged for the poison call because that is NOT protocol ....

Many do but most of us will suggest a discussion with your vet as natural does NOT = safe ...

DE is very natural and safe... added benefit if they lick some they can get wormed.. I put it inside and outside around the borders... it can be put on the pet but I use a natural spray for that ...

Look up De flea it is readily available at pet stores... Of course you should call and ask your vet ... this is a great product for areas without BIG or year round issues

DE and the vets recommendation...I live in an area that has very little fleas , so few that many of the vets only recommend treating during the summer.. Thus I do not have alot of experience ... I have used frontline plus in the past
