I almost set my apartment on fire tonight!!
My nephew Cooper is spending a few nights with me while he's on fall break, so I asked him if he'd like some hot tea while we were watching tv. I turned the stove on and put the tea kettle on the burner and waited for the water to boil. Cooper was sitting on the couch beside me and said, "something smells weird" (my nose was stopped up so I couldn't smell anything.) I told Cooper, "there was probably a little bit of water on the bottom of the tea kettle, no big deal buddy! The kettle should whistle in a minute and then the tea will be ready."

Cooper thankfully walked into the kitchen to throw something away and happened to look over to the stove. Thats when he told me "Ummmm you may want to come in here, somethings melting!" Turns out that I turned on the wrong burner and it burnt straight through the burner cover
I felt soooo dumb!
I'm really glad he caught it though! I immediately turned the burner off and was able to get the burner cover off of the stove thanks to some extendable tongs and a spatulata.

Lesson learned- in the future when I use the stove, ALL burner covers shall be safely removed

Hiding from my SS!
Oops! I destroyed some Tupperware that way once... And a couple months ago I caught the oven on fire because I forgot I needed to clean some drippings from a pie out of it after it cooled, and turned it on to reheat the next day! Wooops!

Glad you caught it in time and everything worked out ok!

What a lucky save! Cooper's a hero!

Years ago when I was young and stupid and owned an aluminum saucepan, I put some water on to boil in it and then got a phone call. After chatting for an hour or so, I returned to the kitchen and found a puddle of melted aluminum dripping down through the electric burner!

That's when I finally sprang for a nice piece of Revereware.

Holy crap that's scary!! Good thing Cooper went in the kitchen when he did!!

I hate electric stoves for that reason. In the house we just bought, we have a flat cooktop stove, and I am always turning on the wrong burners. In the apartment we had a regular electric stove, and I turned on the wrong burner once and ended up burning my hand when I grabbed a pot handle which happened to be over the 'on' burner. (it was on low, so not glowing red, so i didn't know i turned on the wrong burner.) Ouch!

One day we're planning on switching to a gas stove since we already have a gas hookup for heat and hot water. Yeah, I think that's something like job #746723 on the ever-growing list of homeowner jobs..

Oh, dear! Thank goodness everything turned out okay. That is the very reason I had to stop using burner covers. (And my burner covers were cute, too, before the unfortunate incident.)

Had a similar thing happen to me several months ago. I wasn't using the stove, but one of the kitties had managed to turn it on, and I started to smell a weird burning scent.. Went to the kitchen and noticed one of the burner covers wasn't doing very well...
It was pure luck I was home that day, who knows what would have happened. After that I removed all the knobs from the stove so the cats won't be able to turn it on accidentaly. Mind you they are not allowed to the stove/sink table area any way, so I was quite mad and gave them a good lecture... (and I'm sure they didn't understand a word I said
).

Cooper had a good laugh when I showed him the responses to this thread today
He also reminded me that we forgot to buy a fire extinguisher while we were out shopping last night
