I was looking at the cat stuff in WalMart the other day, just "window shopping" and I saw they had all these scratching things that were slices of corrugated cardboard stuck together. I didn't look at them closely, maybe I will next time I go in. Has anyone tried to make one of these? Did the cats like them? Money is tight but I thought it'd be fun to get a few free boxes and give it a shot.

My cats love those scratching cardboard things... They last along time. I never tried to make one but it is just layers of cardboard somehow glued together. Walmart sometimes has these real cute ones shaped like couches and they are pretty big for about $10.00 and that includes catnip.. My cats actually sleep on them too and when i ad the catnip they fight over it.....lol

Nora loves them also! We get her a new one for Christmas every year, plus another one sometime in between. They last about 6 months or so for our one cat. She uses it and it completely keeps her from scratching on anything else. We can tell it's time to get a new one b/c she starts scratching our rugs or the stairs again. For as long as they last, I think they are pretty inexpensive.

Our cats adore the cardboard scratchers! They wear claw caps, but they still use the scratchers at least 20 times a day to mark their territory!!
I have never made any, but I can get a pack of 3 for less than $5. If you have a lot of cardboard, I think it would be really easy to make.

I think the scratching posts are made from one giant piece of card board folded up like a paper fan (resembling the ones made in kindergarten if you have made them) I assume they are made like that because it would make the building process much faster and save money on not having to use glue.

My cats love the cardboard scratching pads.

I have one suggestion if you consider buying them.  Since they come in lots of sizes and shapes, my boys prefer the larger wider ones that they can stand on easily and dig the front paws in and pull backwards, pushing with their rear legs (all on the pad).  The smaller ones skidded around when they tried this and mostly this is due to the way they like to scratch so just be aware of how your cats behave.   Tall scratching posts where they  can push off the solid base also works well for me.
