When we picked him up, the technician told me he'd been wild this morning, so he was already in his carrier!!
He can be wild first thing in the morning, so that's a good sign.

He's been licking himself all over ever since we got him home about an hour ago and I'm concerned about how much licking is normal. I can tell he's still sore (understandably) because of how he's walking, how he holds his tail, and how he sits. What should I look for . All they told me was to look for swelling. Never having had a male kitty before, I'm not sure what normal looks like. Help!

Thanks ya'll! Is it normal for them to drink a lot of water once home? He's been drinking A LOT more water than normal.

I think he will be ok. The anethesia might have dried him out alittle bit so he's thirsty. I'm glad he's home and he will be his old sweet self in no time.

Have you ever had surgery or any procedures that require you to be off fluids for 8-12 hours? If so - you were likely very thirsty once you could drink, and if not - fair warning if you ever need to be, you'll be dying to get a nice glass of cold water.

As long as he doesn't keep drinking large amounts of water tomorrow and the next day, he's fine. Offer him an extra serving of wet food later, it'll probably settle on his belly better than dry - especially with all the water.

For male cats, it's just like any other incision. Watch for swelling - if it gets too bad, call the vet. Keep any eye out for redness and any oozing (specifically if any fluid oozing is not clear), these are signs of infection - just like with a spay incision.

He'll be sore for a couple of days. But as long as it's healing nicely that will go away.

Thank you everyone. He FINALLY laid down about 2 hours ago and is still sleeping. He was so restless, drinking water, and licking himself all over. He's eaten twice since he got home, some dry and a serving of wet food for lunch. I was thinking it was probably a good thing for him to drink since it would help flush out the rest of the anesthesia from his body.

My little guy was just neutered too. He did drink quite a bit of water as well. And was starving too!!! I didnt give him too much at once though- in case his belly was upset didn't want him throwing it all up.

Glad your little guy is doing well!!!

It is hard to tell if the swelling is bad or not- just keep an eye and if things look bigger than they did previously I would be concerned. And look for any redness or bleeding/oozing.

He'll be back to his normal crazy self in no time!!!

Licking: If what you're describing is that he is licking his fur all over - then, I'll share this observation with one of my cats - Buddy - he's the same cat that has been diagnosed with Leukemia - I had taken him to the vet because he just wasn't well. They gave him the 14-day antibiotic injection - Convenia, along with a steroid shot. He went "crazy" with all the fur licking so, I suspected one of the meds.

The Vet said that the steroid was what was usually given for that sort of symptom - itchy skin - so it was highly unlikely it was that. She said that he had been given the Convenia for his surgery (neuter - two weeks earlier) and he didn't have a reaction then. Well, just maybe his system couldn't take another dose of Convenia so soon and IT was what caused the reaction. ??

post #42 for the itching/licking problem

I don't know if he stopped licking because the meds wore off, or, because I immediately put him on a grain-free diet. ???

That's my 2¢ - maybe your boy was given Convenia - if so - I'd be interested in knowing that bit of info.

I think he was licking, almost compulsively, from the effects of the meds and to get the icky hopsital smell off of him. He was trying to get to smelling like himself again, you know? Anyway, he's mucho better this morning. No compulsive licking, returned to drinking normal amounts of water, normal eating, and running wild after breakfast like normal. Now we'll just keep an eye on his incision to be sure there's no swelling, abnormal redness or discharge.
