What do you think of $239.00 JUST for the operation. My daughter has 3 females, 6 months old that she has raised since they were orphans her DH found at work.

We have been going to our vet for over 20 years. I think that this is excessive. It will be almost $1,000 to spay these 3. That does not count the office visit and exam.

Is this outrageous or is this the norm? How do these vets sleep at night?

But that's up in New York, correct? Here it's $106, operation, bloodwork, pain meds included in the price. There's no office visit included.

Shop around or see if there are any low cost alternatives.
Baring that, get one done a month if there are no intact males around and she thinks she can keep them in.

That honestly doesn't sound like that much to me - considering a practice has staff to pay, facilities to maintain at a high level, continuing education requirements - any medical practice is a very labor and material intensive situation.

But, lots of vets donate a lot of time and materials either pro bono or discounted - maybe check around and see what the low cost options are. I know my own vet has X number of discounted speuters available each month. But it's hard when you've got multiple procedures coming up at one time. Sort of like my dentist - I honestly don't think for the skill, etc., involved, going to the dentist is that expensive - but I was weeping and wailing when I needed a bridge replacement last spring.

It never sounds like that much until you're the one paying it...

We just got a quote from his major competitor...179 for the spay, 44 exam for the first and 22.00 for the next two each.

Then its 13.00 for rabies and distemper before hand. We usually make the rabies clinics, but for whatever reason, this year she missed them. They are house cats, never go out. No ferals outside.

Yep, we are in New York State, but in a rural area. We will keep calling around.

I highly doubt he has a certain number of low cost s/n per month.

I am going to move where its 106.00!! Man, our vet charges that just to get an appointment !

Well, the cost of living is fairly low here. So it balances out. And you would not like living in rural western Oklahoma - the dryness, heat, and just general lack of everything would drive you nuts.
It's better to be closer to cat only clinics and specialists if you need them.

I hope you can find someone to give you a better price quote. Ask shelters and rescues who they use.

Yipes! I just had 4 kittens spayed and the total was $380-something ($90 each plus tax). But it is true that the price of living is a lot higher in most places. There are a lot of bad things about living in the sticks, but the low cost of living is one good thing.

Check with all the local rescue groups. They might know of a way to have it done for less.

Sneaky Pie was over $200. But that was 9 years ago and I had her done at the vet.

When we got HollyHeart- I asked the vet for a price. $300! It did include everything. So I checked around and found a much better deal at the humane society. $50 for everything.
They were so nice. She was back to being the kitten she is only hours after her proceedure. She ran around the house with a highlighter in her mouth

My only gripe is that it took forever for the sutures to dissolve. She had her proceedure done in Feb, and it was mid-summer when they finally were gone. They weren't hurting her, and she wasn't trying to pull them out so I just let it be.

I could probably go there and get the girls' rabies shots for cheaper than what I pay the vet. But I really like my vet's office, and it's only about $100 a year for each kitty well-check. I looked into their prices for flea/tick stuff, and the humane society's prices were about as much as the vet office charges.

Nicholas had to be neutered before we could officially adopt (even though we were already fostering). We went through the shelter and it was $30.

Now we have to get Jacqueline spayed and that will be $130....or we can wait til the first Monday of next month...the low cost place is $55 for spay, rabies vac. and pain meds. I think we may do that minus the vac.

We just had Tumbles neutered today and while I understand that neuters are generally less expensive than spays, we are only paying $45 and that includes an overnight stay. We called our previous 2 vets to get prices. One was going to be almost $200 of which $35 would be a new patient fee because the vet had never seen him before even though Tumbles is fully vetted and I have his records. If I wanted bloodwork, it would've been another $50 approx. The second vet was about $150. We live in a major city in Texas. All three of these vets are in a 10 mile radius of our home.

Depending on what vet you use here - it runs anywhere between $90 - $180 for a spay. I know you can get a cat neutered at the "cheap vet" for $50 - but he cuts corners. He also uses Ketamine for the anesthesia, which is concerning. So I guess I'd weigh the pros & cons - find out more about the procedure from a 'cheap vet'.

Prices vary wildly around here .... LC clinics its about $40-80. And it goes up from there. My boys were all neutered by the pound vet. Eeesh! Some vets here have a cash price vs. credit. I would agree to call around ... but don't make price the ONLY deciding factor. Get some recommendations from people you know.

Even here in Japan its about 20,000. That was about $200 USD at the time I had Aya done two years ago. The Vet hospital I worked for in the USA charged similar and they required an exam and up-to-date rabies shot beforehand. You could opt out of the pre-anesthesia bloodwork (another '0-80 bucks) for a young healthy animal.

And there are no 'low-cost' options here as the benefits of speutering have not really sunk in in the Japanese mindset yet... Rate is down around 30 percent of pets vs. 70plus in the USA.
