I’ve been having issues with one of my cats pooping outside the litter box. Long story, so please bear with me... At the first of this year (2010), I adopted two kittens, one male, one female. They were two of four my mother was fostering. The mother was feral; we believe the father was tame. I got them as companionship to my existing cat (male) following the loss of my other kitty to kidney disease. At first things were fine and all three got along great. About three months later, my brother and his daughter moved in with me, bringing along their two cats, both female. Again, things went along with no issues. Three months later, because we needed more room, I ended up buying a house and we all moved. Things were fine for about three weeks. Suddenly, my male started pooping outside the litter box. Then the female followed suit. The male has since stopped and now uses the litter box with no issues. The female continues. The oddest thing is that she pees in the box, but will not poop in it. She began pooping on the carpet and now only poops on the tile. Her favorite time to poop seems to be immediately after we've cleaned the boxes - many times right in front or behind one. We have tried all kinds of remedies: We have increased the number of boxes in the house from three to four and now five (one for each cat), the boxes are cleaned twice a day, we’ve tried Feliway and Cat Attract. We’ve cleaned out and scrubbed all the boxes down with soap and water and increased the attention we pay her. Every time she is noticed peeing in the box we praise her heavily. She does not appear to be in any distress; she plays, purrs, eats, drinks, is very friendly and affectionate and a very sweet cat – except for this one problem. All five are fixed. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I found the text in this book spot on, but the illustrations aren't helpful at all. Good over all book

This mat caught my eye because of its size and texture, which traps fine litter rather well. It's large enough for jumbo litterboxes, which is also a plus. It's not quite as easy to clean as a...

This scoop was a freebie with some clumping litter I bought last year, and I like it so much that I've bought a second one. It's perfect for fine clumping litter, which it sifts very thoroughly....

I assume you've used an enzyme cleaner to clean the pooped on spots since you've read up enough to know about feliway and cat attract.
Has she ever been to the vet for this? It's possible that there's an issue with the consistency of her stools or something else causing her discomfort when she goes.
Is there any, even subtle, tension between the cats? Any of the cats.

Although there is some tension between my brother's cats and mine (my brother says his China kitty is "bi-polar" , it wasn't an issue when we were in my previous place and for the first three weeks in my current home. I definitely always use a special enzyme cleaner on the floors and shoot areas with the "no" spray. I have discussed this with my vet and the next step is to bring her in to be checked, although the male and female were checked previously when I took them in for their neuter/spay, but that wasn't done by my vet and the issue wasn't happening then.

Go ahead and get her checked. You never know if there's something underlying that at this time could be easily treated.
And if there's any tension in the house, between the other cats or between cats and humans (say, one of the cats doesn't like a particular person), a cat can pick up on that. A more sensitive cat will get stressed and do stuff like this.
You could try using bach's rescue remember (pet version) in their water to see if it helps any.

Yep, I'm sure she will just LOVE a trip to the vet. She gets along wonderfully with my brother and niece, although we must admit her strange elimination behavior gets frustrating. But, we all love her anyway.
I've never heard of Bach's Rescue Remember. Does PetSmart carry it?
