Tomorrow's the big day for our little man. No food or water after 8pm and he has to be there at 7:30 in the morning. Not thrilled about waking up early on my day to sleep in.
He'll stay overnight and we'll pick him up after 8AM on Thursday. While I'm not anxious or apprehensive, I just don't want to be apart from him overnight. My other cats have been day-only procedures and I've been able to pick them up in the late afternoon. This is a different vet with lots of years experience, but still...leaving him overnight will be hard. Pray everything goes well and he's back to bouncing off the walls and pestering the girls soon.

Gosh, that's strange that he's staying overnight for a neuter. Jeesh, these days a human gets kicked out of the hospital less than 24 hours after major surgery (often), so guess you should be thankful they are keeping such a close eye on him

(they grow up so quickly, don't they!)

It always killed me for the overnights. Thankfully found a vet who lets them go hours later. Is the overnight place at least staffed at night?

Good luck and he will barrell out of carrier for his friends

Overnight seems funny if the surgery is only a neuter, and he has no health issues to consider.

Is he having another procedure?

Is this a new vet for you?

Also, the no food or water after 8 pm sounds strange, too - even with a 7 a.m. surgery -

I've trapped ferals - both female and males - for altering.

The vet doesn't want food/water after 11 p.m. with a 7:30 a.m. appointment - I took them in, they had their surgery, and I picked them at at 4 pm -

Some places say it's okay to release them once I get them back (I was told this)- but, then - some folks have no choice.
- there was no way that I was going to release them - especially the female spay
- before 24 hours after their surgery

Here's a link to a website about the pre-op requirements: http://www.animalsamaritans.org/spay_neuter.html

I like it that a vet will keep overnight.

When I questioned them keeping him overnight, I was told it was just to monitor them, make sure there are no complications, to keep them contained, and to be sure there are no side effects from the anesthesia.

This is a new vet that we started going to in June, but I have a friend who's gone to her for a long time. I like her and I like that they want to keep him to monitor him and all that, but I just want my baby home with me.

The only other "procedure" he's having done is microchipping, which is not a big deal. I called and verified the time to withhold food and water last week. At my previous vet, it was nothing after 10pm. I don't know if there is overnight staff or if someone comes in during the night to check on them. Knowing this vet, she probably comes to check on them.

I think I'll be there on Thursday when the doors open!

The vet that we go to also keeps kitties overnight for both spays and neuters and as much as it kills me to be away from them, I think it is better to be safe rather than sorry.

We dropped him off and he was none too happy and telling the technician how much he really would rather NOT have the procedure!
I took his food and one of the towels he likes to sleep on, so hopefully it won't be as stressful for him. The technician told me that we could call around 1 to check on him as he should be fully awake by then (and giving them grief!). Now the waiting begins.

He'll be FINE, Stephanie. As for you...I recommend going out to lunch or dinner and a nice walk in the fall air!

I also agree it's a bummer that he stays overnight. However, my neighbor caused a ruckus last week when she had a kitten neutered, and demanded she bring him home right afterward. Well, guess who was calling the ER vet at 9 pm because kitty was bleeding? Y, he was jumping around and knocked something loose.

Tomorrow Tumbles will be as good as new and the introductions to the girls can begin anew!

Take care,

C

He'll have the staff there wrapped around his little paw before the end of the day, I'm sure! They may even be calling me to come pick him up if he continues to voice his opinion at being there.

I always think these types of things are harder and more traumatic for me than they are for the animal.

Called to check in the little man and he's doing great. The girl said he looked like he'd just woken up from a bad dream! Poor guy!
