Getting a New Kitten

Hello All! This is my first post! We are getting a kitten on Thursday! She is going to be 10 weeks by the time we get them! The lady who rescued the kitty and has been taking care of them has been feeding them kitty chow. I was wondering how long i have to feed them that before I can switch kitty (we are still deciding on a name) to something a little better?

I would continue to feed what she's currently eating for a week or so until she's settled in and eating a normal amount. Then, add the new food in over a period of a couple of weeks. Also, add in a couple of servings of wet food a day and allow the kitty to free feed on the dry food. We usually do a 3/4 old food to 1/4 new food for a week, then 50-50 old/new for a week, then 25% old-75% new for a week, then completely new. The canned food is so much better for their systems than dry, which is why I mentioned adding that.

Thank You so much Stephanie (that's my name too!) I was all set to buy some wellness and the lady at the front said i should probably keep her on what she was eating until she is 6 months ... that seemed like a super long time!

Get some of the current food the kitten is eating (not too much) and then mix in the better brands. IMO its best to feed a meal of dry and a meal of canned each day. Raw is also great a few times a week.

If the kitten is male, sometimes all dry can cause more problems with UTI's.

We got Tumbles in mid-July and he was about 10 weeks old. We fed him about 6 wet food servings a day and left dry food out for him all the time. We did this for about 3 weeks and then when he was allowed free roam of the house 24/7, he went on the same feeding schedule as our other cats. Four wet food meals a day and dry periodically through the day. We always put down both wet and dry when he's offered his normal wet serving (6:30 AM, Noon, 6:30 PM and 10:30pm) In a few months, we'll cut out the canned noon meal and go with only a small serving of dry.

We started off with Wellness canned kitten and Royal Canin Babycat 34 dry mixed with Taste of the Wild dry. Within a couple of weeks, we switched to Evo Kitten/cat canned and solely Taste of the Wild dry. He still prefers canned, but will eat dry if he's offered it and he's hungry.
