Genever wants out!

I have taken Genever out in the back yard only 2 times ever with a harness and leash. She loved it, we explored all the plants in the garden and the grass and the dirt. The first time was a few weeks or a month ago. Since then, sometimes she meows at the back door and pushes on it a bit. She never ran out an open door though.... Well this weekend she just started running out when we open the door sometimes!!! What the heck? She never ever did that, even after I took her out the first time. She would never even try to go past the threshold of the door. Gone are those days, apparently. So yesterday, after she ran out, I grabbed her, brought her in, and put her harness on and then took her out for a bit. That seemed to be ok then, but of course then she didn't want to come in. I got her to walk almost all the way to the door, then she stopped. So I had to bring her in, and she carried on. This morning she is just about howling to go outside! I even closed the kitchen door in hopes she'd stop, but she was even scratching at the door a bit. What do I do? Become more regular with taking her outside on the harness so she doesn't feel the NEED to go outside, like she will learn she will get to go outside so no need to howl? I do not like this new-found sense of confidence she has in just going out the door. It scares me. Especially is she would run out at night, out of the spotlight.

You should hear this meow- it's so pitiful! I'm afraid the neighbors are going to think there's an abandoned, abused cat in here!

Wessie was an outdoor cat until he was shot by our neighbor. He was pitifully meowing at our door for a couple weeks, but now never meows at the door. It depends on what you want to do. Are you willing to go outside with Genever all the time?
Hope this helps,
Eileen

Well I sure as heck won't let her outside on her own, unsupervised. Not that I don't trust her, but I don't trust other people and animals. BF agrees with me on that.

In the meantime, BF put her harness on, not sure why because we're not taking her out right at the moment, but she stopped carrying on! Strange. We'll take her out for a bit a little later.

I think if you've got a regular time you can take her out, that's probably the best way to manage it. Then after a few days or so she learns to know it's coming....

I hope she will learn that she can go out with me or BF and then she will stop this carrying on. Yesterday was seriously annoying and embarrassing! I don't know how far meows travel, if it bothered the neighbors or if they thought something bad was happening. I know if I heard a meow like that coming from somewhere, I would be concerned! However, since i did know where it was coming from, I was not concerned, just "Come on Genever, stop already!"

We did go out for a bit yesterday, we did a nice lap around the garden and the inside of the garage (it's mostly empty- we haven't had time to accumulate too much junk yet ) sniffing everything, then another half lap around the garden, the she decided to lie down and roll around in the dirt (and ants) by the tangering tree and roses. A bunch of ants. But she got agressive when I tried to move her, evemn tried to back out of her harness which scared me, so I grabbed her, readjusted it, and then just let her roll around for a bit and be happy, hopefully not getting ant bites. It wasn't too fun when it was time to go in, she really didn't want to. I hope she will learn.

No howling today yet. Yet. Though I have the kitchen door closed too, usually she sits by there and meows.

I might look into other harnesses, I have the 'double H' for her now, any suggestions for anything less wriggle-out-y?
