God, Thank GOD I got home last night!
Printing insurance paperwork and whisking him to the E.R vet - I am not sure if I should wait or not, but I am not taking a chance since he is a male... tomorrow is Sunday anyways... Poor baby... I just noticed tonight him going in and out of the litter box, and some pink which I think is blood in the box - he can not pee... He might be blocked.
Please send him vibes...
Thanks!

Oh no! As soon as I saw the first word of this thread, I knew this wasn't going to be good. Poor Bugsy! Poor you!

Here are as many vibes as me and my crew can muster: .

I know you'll do all that you can for Bugsy -- you're one of the best meowmies in the world! Even if he is blocked, he can be treated and can return to his happy, healthy, and full-of-life self. I'm glad you're rushing him to the vet and I know you'll likely not see this before you leave, but know that you and Bugsy are in my thoughts and prayers. If you need anything, please just let me know.

Much love to you and Bugsy. Please keep us updated.

Ok, home from the ER... He is not blocked, thank goodness! The poor thing had so much blood in him... Blood on his tail,on his belly... His parts was even blocked with a blood clot . The Vet was not able to squeeze his bladder for a urine sample, so I agreed to take an x-ray to check for blockage - his badder was really small which indicated only and UTI. She said the blood could be from inflammation on the bladder walls due to the UTI, or external, due to him licking himself, but it is not too uncommon.
The first x-ray also showed something she was a "little" concerned about his kidney, and told me to get a full blood panel. His second x-ray however came completely normal, so she said it could be the positioning... I am taking it to his vet regardless - he had a full blood test recently before his dental work and it was all normal, so I am not too concerned.
She wanted to give him a shot of Metacam, which I refused. She gave him a morphine derivative shot instead. The idea is to him enough for him to pee.
He is now on Clavamox for the next 7 days, and Buprenorphine for the next 2 days. If he is not considerably better in 48 hours we need to go in again...
Aside from that, more wet food, less dry...
I can't put him in urinary food as he is allergic to chicken, so out of luck there... This was my worse fear... God, I was so afraid of ever crossing this bridge...
Please send my boy vibes...

Since the ER vet was not able to get a sample for a culture, I am taking him to his regular doctor first thing Monday morning for an urine test- I want to make sure I am giving him the proper antibiotic from the get go... It is going to cost me a pretty penny, but better safe than sorry...
I just heard that Clavamox might not be the best option? Anybody has opinions on this?

he peed!
I would say 1/2 of the amount he normally pees, but, definitely peed, in front of me... no crying either, which is good... Well, he is on a morphine shot, so that helps... When he jumped out there was a blood drop on the floor but I am happy happy happy with the pee puddle!
Can't wait for Monday to take him to his doctor... my poor little baby...
This is a nightmare! This UTI is going to cost me a good $500... today alone was $310... Thank goodness for insurance!

YAY!!!

I guess you are offically a converted-litter-box-stalker now? I know the feeling.

SO GLAD he wasn't blocked. Your an awesome meowmy.

One tip for the urine test, you could give him a large serving of wet about a hour before you go. What I do is put the kitty in a carrier (or bathroom) with a can of wet 1 hr before we go to the vet, because if I don't the cat always has a empty bladder due to UTI making them pee so much. One hour with no litter box isn't as bad as it sounds, they don't pee every hour. Well healthy cats dont...

Anyway I am so glad you caught this in time, keep us updated!!

Oh sweetie, how scary for you and Bugsy!! Sending a TON of vibes his way, and please give him a kiss for me.

Good vibes for Bugsy that all is quickly sorted out. I have been through this scenario with Wellington and I know only too well how scary it is. To answer one of your questions, clavamox is quite normal as a first try drug for UTI, though if it doesn't work there are other stronger options. You are right about the Metacam - glad your vet was OK about an alternative, I have argued till blue in the face with some vets on this score.

Poor Bugsy! Keep us updated on him, please.

I spent a few nights in the emergency room as a child, with my mother worrying over one of us, and you sound just the same as she did.

Good luck to Bugsy and you...I've been so fortunate with Dante - ever since our scare a year ago Labor Day he's been ok in the box, with good urine samples...but thank goodness he can eat the Hills CD fine. Also, thank goodness for pain killers - that helped my boy so much when his bladder was so irritated.

I hope your upcoming vet visit is relatively 'boring' and that you can find a diet for Bugsy that'll help out on all counts.

Hill's CD wet comes in seafood, if that's not a problem for him.

I don't know what you feed re: dry, and I know with the traveling an all wet diet is a PIA, but if he's got crystal problems, wet is really the best way to go (I'm sure you know that, but just in case).

I left a message to his vet, I am checking if he wants me to come in for a urinalysis, since that was not done, to check for crystals... I rather do that to be on the safe side...
Bugsy eats 2 meals of wet, and snacks on dry, but today I fed him wet only - that's what how it's going to be from now on... He eats Z/D. My pet sitter comes 2x a day, so it can be done when I travel...
I checked CD Fish, it has chicken fat... I discussed it with Sharky, and she said it is a 50/50 chance that he will have problems with it... I will try a couple of cans to see it - if he doesn't have problems, I will switch him to it, or at least do 1/2 Z/D and 1/2 C/D.
Thanks for letting me know
Poor thing is so traumatized of all the meds he is taking now I just hope he doesn't have Crystals - at least he is not in and out ot the box anymore, looks like he is doing better... He is able to pee, but still dripping blood... My poor little baby

Oh poor Bugsy. What a rough day - I'm so glad you were home with him. Hopefully it's not crystals and he'll start to heal up soon. Sending lots of healing and big for both of you.

Ok, so I spoke to his vet today, and he feels it is not necessary to bring him in just yet; he feels the treatment he is in is appropriate and as long as he is doing better, it is the right course to be in. He said this is the antibiotic he would use also, and it is too soon to judge... It has been only a couple of days. He received the paperwork from the ER vet, and all checks out well per his judgment.
Bugsy IS doing better, so he says to wait and not put him through more stress; to call him Wednesday to discuss.
He is not going in and out of the box all the time anymore, is peeing somewhat normally (a little less in volume), is playing, hanging out with the other kitties, eating, not drinking as he is eating only wet food, but that's normal, and being his normal self...
He doesn't look as though he is in too much pain... He does lick himself a little more than normal, but the ER vet said it would take a full 2 days for the antibiotics to kick in, which will be tonight...
Talking to his vet made me feel a whole lot better...
I hope he will be fine now

Just read this and am hoping Bugsy continues to improve too!

I am also relived to hear your vet's judgment on the treatment - because it sounds very much like the treatment we received for Teppo just recently. I had my doubts because it was the first time, and somehow some parts of it were so much like 'guesstimation'. Teppo did not have bleeding like poor Bugsy but he was also very near to blocking and it was heartwrenching.

We also got Clavomox and our vet indicated it is the first line to try. Unfortunately, it did not work with Teppo. I would think you'd see in a day or two if it is the right one for Bugsy. Teppo went downhill pretty much the third day on it after it initially eased his symptoms.

I am more encouraged about our vet now that you say your vet did not seem to push for the urinalysis at this point. I found it weird then. We could not get a sample on the emergency visit either because Teppo's bladder was all shrunken and empty, and his belly was very sore. We had to get it done when Clavomox failed but there was no sign of bacteria at that point. I think the vet was not really wanting to do the sampl after the antibiotics were started since they would screw up the results for anything else but the crystals part. Just like you I thought I wanted the info anyway.

Let us know how Bugsy does. Teppo is currently trying the Cosequin supplement to keep his parts supple. That is what was actually our vet's first suggestion for 'treatment' after he saw Teppo's results. Vet though it was most likely stress-related.

Had a visit with my vet today - didn't take Bugsy with me, but wanted to sit down with him, take the X-ray for him to take a look at, and discuss Bugsy's situation in length.
First let's talk about the X-Ray: The ER vet had thought his kidney looked a little weird on the first x-ray, but on the second one, it came completely normal... She thought it might be a matter of positioning during the procedure, but she wanted me to take it to him to discuss. He said it looked normal, really could not see anything out of the ordinary, and that it didn't look like I should be concerned.
On to the UTI: He thinks that what he has is cystitis/inflammation brought on by stress, which does make a LOT of sense.
I left to Florida Monday, and my friend Donna, stayed here in my house through Thursday - she was anew person, who he had never seen... She got here right before I left for a whole week. When I left in the morning he was acting absolutely strange, completely freaked out... I had never seen him so stressed like that in my life... He kept running to me and away from me completely confused, as though he didn't know who I was... Maybe because I slept on the couch and she on my bed with him... I don't know...
That week he spent alone with Donna and Kelly, the pet sitter. They are both huuuuge pet lovers.... but were not me. I got home Friday night, and disaster stroke Saturday night. It was a complete week of stress.
The feliway was late to get in the mail, so only got here on Wednesday or Thursday...
Anyway... The vet also said what makes he thinks this is cystitis/inflammation, is the fact that he is urinating blood. The antibiotic, he says, is not to cure an infection at this point, but to prevent an opportunistic infection that might occur due to the bloke capillaries on his bladder/urinary tract, so Clavamox will do just fine. The plan is, if he continues to pass blood by Wednesday, he will go in for a steroid shot to bring the inflammation down.
The vet main concern is his future bladder health -he said he is not too concerned about this episode, but since he does have immune mediator disorders, such as his stomatitis and IBD, he might be prone to cystitis as well - he NEEDS to be in a bladder health diet.
I discussed with him the fact of Bugsy being allergic to chicken, and he said this is secondary now - his bladder is more important, as this can kill him, and can kill him fats if he gets blocked.
So.... We agreed to try the CD seafood wet first and see how he does on it...
I bought some to see if he likes it and how he reacts to it... crossing my fingers all is going to be well...
I also read a lot of good reviews on Cosequin being good on preventing cystitis and UTIs, so I am going to add that to his diet as well... (Thanks piikki for the lead)
I now need to work on putting Lucky on a schedule so I don't have dry food laying around and can feed them all 2 meals a day - I have some time to do that, thankfully!
Anyways... please send vibes for him to continue to improve until Wednesday so we don't need to go back in
