Loss of pigment on ears?

DH and I stopped by a co-worker's house the other day. He is the kind soul that adopted one of my Sil's rescue cats, but he has also has a female red tabby. Sil had told me she was the most unusual looking cat she'd ever seen. While she is red all over, her ears are completely white. My co-worker said that when she was a kitten all the hair fell off her ears and it grew back white. I know there are some amazing cat experts on here...does anyone have any idea what could have caused this? This cat honestly looks like something that walked straight out of the jungle. I know she is a DSH, but she is the most exotic looking creature. She is long-legged, lean, and big earred.

I know that when cats are shaved the fur can grow back odd colors. Could be the same thing if it fell out too.

She sounds stunning though!

I hadn't thought about that. We adopted a cat (Garfield RIP) that had just been attacked by dogs. He had a large area on his side where he was bitten. The hair grew back different...it was the same color, but was shorter and had an almost wavy look.

Cat fur can do weid things lol.

When Bella had surgery, the parts that were shaved grew back way darker. Now both of her sides (the bottom 1/2) are much much darker than they were before. I've read on here that it is pretty common for light colored cats & siamese.
