Pardon if this is a really dumb question, but: I am about to begin volunteering at a sanctuary for feral cats, some of whom have tested positive for Feline Leukemia and FIV; all have had rabies shots.
My question is: do I need to take any precautions so I don't transmit any diseases or illnesses (including URIs and UTIs) to my own previous cat, Ritz? Ritz had shots/vaccinations for rabies, leukemia boster and calicivirus booster in late February 2010. I do notice that whenever I am around my friend's cats, she sniffs me a lot.
Any other advice you can give me? I never had a cat before I adopted Ritz/Ritz adopted me in late January 2010, so this is all very new, exciting, rewarding to me. (And I ask myself all the time: why didn't I do this sooner)?
Thanks.

Oh how wonderful of you!

When we worked with a rescue, they had a separate area for sick kitties. They had it set up so there was a sink right next to the door - everyone washed hands before leaving. When we got home, we'd leave our shoes by the front door and immediately go shower, change clothes, and put whatever we were wearing in the laundry, to which the cats did not have access.

That worked for us.

I don't know about transmission of FeLV, but transmitting FIV is not a worry. It is deep tissue bite wounds only. URIs are the biggest risk - and following simple rules of hygiene (washing hands and changing clothes) should work just fine.

What a wonderful thing you're doing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
