Probiotics

I just started giving Mickey probiotics today for his loose stool.I was wondering if anyone has any experience with them. How quickly can I expect to see results and how long can I give them to him?

Yes many have LOTS of experience... it may take a few days for you to see improvement and it is possible to make it worse prior to better

It depends on what is causing your cat's diarrhea, and also on the probiotic... An emergency treatment of Bene-bac done at higher doses every other day (as instructed on the packaging) for example, works very quickly, while regular daily doses works slower...
Why does your cat have diarrhea?

Probiotics were recommended by my vet after a regimen of antibiotics, for obvious reasons. If thats not the cause, then it won't be the solution. You can also try mixing a bit of organic pumpkin (not pie filling obviously) into their food which acts as a fiber matrix for the stool.

I agree though, getting at the root is the most important issue.

After 3 weeks on 1/2 tablet of acidophilus twice daily, Tumbles' poops are normal again. We think it was related to teething, but he's also been dewormed once since we got him in July as well as completed his kitten shots and a rabies shot, so it could've been a combination of stuff causing his loose stools.

Thanks for the feedback. My vet figures it is an overgrowth of bad bacteria in his tummy. She had given me Metro but Mickey had a weird reaction to it although she doesn't think it had to do with the metro.
I spoke with her today and she thinks I should try t give him 7 days of the metro.I'm very leery though. So far he has only been once this morning and it was still loose.
If I do retry the metro can I continue giving him the probiotics?

Well I didn't start the metro last night because I was waiting to see if he would go again.Nothing till this morning but lo and behold after 2 1/2 dyas of probiotics ....a normal poo I have my fingers crossed that this is finally over.

suzieQ77, I'm so glad your kitty is getting better. My cat has been having soft stools as well so I wanted to try a probiotic. My vet gave me one but it has animal digest in it and my cat is allergic to chicken so I didn't want to use that one, then at petco I found the Bene Bac that is made for small animals but a worker said I shouldn't give that one to my cat. is this the one i'm looking for

Hi Paulie! I'm actually giving Mickey human yogurt pills.I just give him half a capsule twice a day as Stephanie said she was doing also.I bought them at the pharmacy for under $10.It seemed to make a difference in a couple days!!

Thanks so much for that information!!!
I'm still trying to find the bene bac powder only because Paulie is allergic to lots of things and this one doesn't seem to have anything he could be allergic to in it. I'm so glad the yogurt pills helped your kitty!

I buy mine on Amazon, IMHO it is the best deal around, $16.95 for a whole pound. Bene-bac has a great clean formula... I add 1/4 tsp per meal (2x/day on their wet food).
Here is the link: Bene-Bac 1lb powder

Paulie I too had to find a yogurt pill that was lactose free.I know that sounds like an oxymoron I believe it was a little treat of milk that husband gave him that started the problem.Good luck with Paulie I hope the Bene-bac works well for you

Thanks guys, I really hope this works for Paulie. It[s weird because he will have normal stools for like a week and then they are back to soft again, that's why I think it might be more stress related then the food and it was even like this when he was eating Z/D. Also he isn't going more than once a day it's just soft when he does go. suzieQ77 I will look for the yougurt pills you used if the Bene back doesn't work. Carolina have you given bene bac to your cat who is has food allergies? I still have Bugsy in my thoughts!

That's so weird Paulie.Mickey was doing the same thing! He was only going once or twice a day in the end but it was loose. When it first started it was more often but then it tapered off.Makes you wonder if it's something in the air

Thanks for the vibes for Bugsy Sure, Bene-Bac has been the best probiotic for Bugsy, who has IBS and allergies... I tried bene-bac, probios and fortiflora (for Hope), IMHO bene-bac is the best one. I do not recommend fortiflora to a cat with allergies...
