Urinating outside litter box - kidney disease

I have a 15 year old who for about the past year has been urinating outside of his litter box. In the basement, there was a bunch of boxes and low carpet near his box that I kept finding pools of urine. He still uses his box too, but every few days or once a week he would go near it. This week we cleaned out the entire room that his boxes are in (he has 2) which we hoped would help, and tonight he just went again, about 3 feet away from his box.

He does have kidney disease and has had it for about 2 years now. Has anyone else experienced this and any ideas on how I can help? Would adding another litter box in the area he keeps going in help? Any ideas are appreciated.

Have you taken him to the vet since this started? I understand you already know about his issue, but have you checked him for an UTI lately?

He needs a vet check... Yes in some cats CRF can cause or create a opportune environment for UTI issues..

How are you cleaning the spots he is going on?

An extra box and replacing the existing box may help after a through vet check.

He has been to the vet recently for a blood panel which came back fine, and actually a tad better than the prior test.

We threw out the carpet he was going on this week, but tonight we cleaned it with paper towels (its on concrete) and put down some febreeze to mask the oder. Is there something I should specifically use to clean the spots?

What stores do you have?? Natures Miracle is a enzyme based cleaner which I know is safe for concrete... even walmart carrrys a few decent enzyme cleaners... Did the vet do a urinalysis?

He did a urinalysis and all was well. So this cleaner, is it more to just clean the concrete or will it deter him from going in this area?

to put it nicely ... it cleans and the enzymes eat the bateria from the urine thus taking all trace away ... thus kitty cant smell it to resoil it

What are you feeding and has it changed>? What cleaner s do you use in the house

I'm going to try this new cleaner. I've also put another box down there for him to use so we'll see if that helps. Thanks.

Has anyone else has this behavior?

If he's 15, could he be having difficulty getting in and out of the box because of pain or lack of mobility?

When my girl was about 17, the box was difficult for her to negotiate, and my vet suggested I get a BIG stainless steel pan from a restaurant supply house. I used Yesterday's News for litter because of the low lip on the pan.

She used that until she left me two years later.
