Urgently need help!

My mom found a stray cat a couple wks ago that had been hit by a car. She took him to the vet and the vet said he was fine, said he was about 2yrs old and neutered, then just gave her a bandage for a minor injury on his leg and sent her on her way.
Hes been perfectly normal up untill today when he came in (hes an indoor/outdoor cat) and smelled of dead animal really bad. It had been raining all morning so he was wet and cold which showed he had gotten really skinny almost over night. He went up to the room where we keep the cat food and slept. A couple hrs later we checked on him and he didnt lift his head or anything when we pet him... just did like a purr/growl sound, and his second (?) eyelids werent opening all the way though theres no sign of infection.
I offered him some water and he drank it but he looked very weak and when he finished he had drool all over his mouth, it was thick and sticky.
Also hes not showing any signs of pain or aggression either, after he drank the water he let me pet him but went back to sleep.

We cant afford a vet at this time and dont have any idea what could possibly be wrong or how we could help him.

Any advice will help.

I hope someone posts here with some advice for you. Could he have been bitten by an animal?

I don't really know what is going on, but do you think he could have gotten into poison somewhere?

I have no idea, he has no visible signs of injury.

I set him on the floor (he was on the bed) and he stood there for a sec then jumped back on the bed and layed down.
When I pet him he made that noise again but also wanted me to pet him more.

Hes very slow and Lethargic.

Hes such a lovely cat normally, likes laying in your lap and will for hrs if you let him. Hes very quiet and doesnt bother King or my dog.
I just dont know what could have happened to him.

Yes, maybe poison. But you said he had a smell of animal on him, that made me think maybe a skunk has sprayed him or something like that. Wait and see what a good night's sleep will do - maybe he'll feel better tomorrow.

I know you dont have the $$ for a vet but this animal needs one... I would suggest calling the local HS or shelter and explain... often they know vets who will help for a sliding fee or they may take care of it

I have no idea what is going on with him, but I think the only one who can help would be a vet

It wasnt skunk.. I know what skunk smells like.

Mr.Pine passed away early this morning. We still dont know the cause but due to not having money for a Vet all we could do was make him as comfortable as possible.

We'll miss him a lot.

I am sorry for your loss. I understand you did not have money to treat him. My guess would too have been poison. Drooling is a typical sign of that.
He knew he was loved.
