9 week old kitten using floor as toilet paper

I have a 9 week old kitten. Every time he poops, he gets quite a bit of it stuck to his backside. And then he scoots his bottom along the floor leaving streaks and a mess on himself that he doesn't clean (he gets almost daily baths).

Any suggestions on how to avoid the issue of him getting so covered in poop, and also how to discourage him wiping all over the floor?

thank you!!

This is a health issue, not a behavior one. Has he been to a vet for this, yet? Stool issues in young kittens is usually due to parasites or them not tolerating their food very well. You need to take him to the vet.

If he is long-haired clip the back hairs on his legs carefully -don't cut his skin. Add several more litter pans in the same area and be sure to keep them scooped an cleaned daily.

More than likely he has worms- what did they give him for worms? Drontal? Scooting the backside usually indicates roundworms and Drontal only kills tapes.

SFK has been doing this because she's not, um, pinching it off properly. I don't know how worms could be causing that in her case.

So far I've been putting it down to her having outgrown her litter box. Will be getting a new one tonight, and see if that gives her space to scoot in.

She's also not especially enthusiastic about covering it. Lots of digging beforehand, but nothing afterward.

There should be no reason for her sphincter muscles not to work properly. If they're not, then the anus is inflamed which needs treatment. Otherwise it's a food issue (making stools too hard or too soft) or worms. This one needs a vet visit, too.

My boy Indy had this problem too when he was about 3 months old. His issue was that he was allergic to something in his food.

You should definitely take him to the vet to see if there are any health issues, worms or the like. If there aren't, a food switch may be in order.

Good luck!
