I recently switched my cat from science diet optimal health to science diet indoor cat. This was a couple days ago, and I noticed today that my cat left some of the food in the bowl (he never did this before. in fact, he had problems with vomiting because he ate that food too quickly) and just a little while ago he vomited up some liquid and the one treat I gave him today. I switched the food kind of quickly, because I didn't notice how low I was running on the optimal health. Could that be the issue? I'm concerned because there was no food or hairballs in the vomit. Also, my cat starting eating my roommate's cat's food today, which is purina one. Should I buy a small bag of the optimal health and try to switch more slowly or something?

Yes you need to switch more slowly, but it may also be that his system can't handle the new stuff. Also, doesn't sound like he likes it much if he's wanting to ear the other cat's food. Why are you switching?

Anytime we had to switch we did the 1/4 new 3/4 old for a week, then half and half for a week etc.

We did have one cat that had a very sensitive tummy and we weren't able to ever change her food no matter how slowly we tried.

ok, i guess i'll try to make the switch. i switched because i told my mom to buy the science diet indoor adult, not noticing that it was different from optimal care. I don't want to waste the bag of food, since she stockpiled me when she came to visit, but I'd rather have a healthy, happy cat. It might be the size of the pellets, the optimal care is really small, and the regular indoor is about 3 or 4 times as big.

You could always switch to a higher grade food, too, if you're going to switch.

What would you recommend? I bought science diet because that's what the shelter was feeding him, and it's better than all those grocery store cat foods

Do you have access to a Costco?

Their Kirkland brand cat food in the purple bag is high quality, and it is economical too at about $16 for 25 lbs. Both my cats love it and are doing well on it.

The prescription Hill's food is good, the stuff in the stores isn't really all that much better than Purina and other foods sold in stores. We feed Taste of the Wild dry, Wellness (grain-free) canned, and Innova EVO venison canned as well as the kitten/cat formula to our 5 month old. We've also fed Wellness CORE dry. Taste of the Wild and EVO we purchase from the feed store. Wellness we purchase from PetCo.

Sharky is the board "expert" on high quality food, but it depends on where you live, what pet stores you have access to, and what you're wanting to spend on food.
