Sneezing and wet food

My sons cat, Shadow, is about 10 years old. He recently changed his cat food from dry to wet after my rant about how bad dry food can be for an overweight older cat...diabetes especially.

Well, he has started sneezing quite noticeably. Has anyone had that problem out there after a food change?

He does not seem to be sick. Eyes clear. No noisy breathing. Just the sneezing, which is sometimes accompanied by a nasal discharge.

The food he eats is grain free.

My advice is a vet visit. He just thought someone might have had food allergy experience and does this sound like that.

Thanks guys.

Never experienced that except in weaning kittens who get it up the nose Is it all the time or only while eating/right after eating

I've only heard it with kittens and cats that get it up their nose, too.

What type of food is it? Gravy or pate?
What is the cat eating from - bowl or saucer?
Is the dish placed straight on the floor or is it raised up any?
What temp is that food? He's not giving any chilled food, is he?

Its pate. Flat plate on floor. It is not real juicy. But I think I will suggest he raise the plate to just below mouth level.. Food is room temp, no chilled food.

He sneezes randomly throughout the day, so I don't think he is getting any up his nose.

I think it's an allergy to something in it.

I have one that can get wet food on top of his nose, so I won't discredit the possibility of other messy eaters.

If it's a possible allergy, with the sneezing it would sound more like an environmental one so you'd have to run through all of those that exist in the home, too. Dust (dust mites specifically) can be a common allergy.

Otherwise, rule out virus flare ups.

My unprofessional opinion is that it's probably not related to the food change at all. The sneezing is probably related to the changing weather and seasonal change and that it just so happened that the food was changed around the same time as well. I would think that if he was allergic to the food, then there would be other reactions as well, such as increased itchiness and scratching or possibly change in stool/poop consistency.
