I send quite a few letters and packages to the U.S., and I receive a fair bit of mail coming from the U.S. We always have to allow two weeks for delivery any time of the year (I imagine it's worse in December).

Maybe it's just Vancouver Island and I shouldn't speak for other parts of Canada, but Canada Post is SLOW! We see our mail carrier in the neighborhood twice a week if we are lucky, and letters we send regular mail from the Canada Post office take about two weeks to get anywhere else in Canada!

It's so bad that I have had to set up a Fed Ex account to make sure important documents get to Texas in time because I don't always have two weeks to spare. The last year the mail situation has gotten really bad (government cutbacks maybe?).

Moral of the story is you probably want to allow more time than Canada Post suggests!

It can't hurt, though my experience in the past several years has been that their recommendations are pretty spot-on. So it maybe that few miles of water between you and the mainland -- or your particular sub-station -- or both.
