How much does a pedicure cost where you live and what is the experience supposed to be like? I had my first recently and it cost $25 and I gave a $5 tip. (Checked another salon in Hartford and they charged $25 also.)

Everyone at the salon was Vietnamese and very much not inclined to talk. If I asked the pedicurist a question, there was nothing in her answer. The salon was boiling hot, but eventually they turned on the a/c. What I hated most was the flat-screen TV that had infomercials on the entire time I was there. My manicure was okay, but she smudged a couple of the toes. I will not return to that salon.

I thought a manicure would be very relaxing and soothing, but mine wasn't particularly. What should I look for the next time I have a pedicure? Any tips?

It depends on where I go. There is a place next to one of our stores that charges $35 for a mani/pedi but they are Vietnamese and do not talk a lot, and keep the tv on Vietnamese soap operas most of the time. The polish on my hands lasted about a week (which is pretty normal for me) and my toes for about 2 before it started fading.
So I tried another salon that has better hours for me, and they had football on, were very sweet, and were extremely helpful! They charge more (I think it was $45 for both but that included nail art.) The nail polish lasted about 2 weeks which was great! And the toes are still going strong at like 3 or 4 weeks! So I go and pay a little extra, but enjoy the services more!
I want to find a cheaper place, but not real sure. I think it was $35 for just a pedicure there. I may do some price research!
Sorry yours wasnt relaxing! I could fall asleep during mine every time!

I look for a place that seems classy and relaxing inside, and that when you call they can answer your questions! I dont really mind if they dont speak english, but do prefer it, just so that way if I have a question they can answer it!

I have never had a pedicure but when getting my nails done I've noticed that asian salons are always WAY cheaper than the american run ones.

I also think that I get a better job done when I go to the asian ones. At the salon I first started going to I had to pay about $45 just for a set of acrylics, and at the last salon I went to it cost me $25 and then $10 to have them filled in and painted.

I dont think the ethnicity of the place automatically makes it good or bad, you just have to shop around.

I dont go often, but they charge $25 for a regular, and $35 for deluxe (leg massage and hot towel wrap added in). They are Asian and talk a little bit, but its pretty hard to understand most times. They keep the Travel channel on so I usually watch that and relax.

Wow... Pedicures here are usually anywhere from $35-$60 depending on where you go HOWEVER they usually include foot/leg massages, exfoliation, etc. Mom and I go get one every spring as my Mother's Day gift to her and we always enjoy them.

I've only gotten a pedicure once, 6 years ago, a few days before my wedding. It was $50 (but I had a $10 off coupon, so I paid $40). However, it was amazing! You had the full-body massage with heat chair, a choice of a glass of wine, tea, or coffee, a foot massage, exfoliation, soak, nail and cuticle trimming, and polish. It took about 2 hours; my pedicurist was very thorough. She did a wonderful job. The whole thing was just sooo relaxing! I was getting over the flu and dealing with the wedding details, so I needed it. I was so impressed, I went back the next day to get my first (and only) manicure from the same person.

I always said I'd go back, but never got around to it, and also was too cheap to spend $50 on myself...every Christmas vacation, I always tell myself I'm going to do this again, but never get around to it. (Needless to say, it WON'T be in the salon I mentioned in another post today!)

I stay out of those places. I am too concerned about how clean they are and the possibility of a nail fungus. The one time I did it, I went to the local beauty college. Their students do manicures and pedicures for a reasonable price and I have confidence that they clean the tools. I know the supervisor there.

I was thinking that too. The little gidgets she was sticking under my nails, well that wasn't the first time she'd used them. It wasn't like she unwrapped them just for me. And I was wondering whether they were disinfected inbetween customers.

I go used to typically go to a salon that was a chain of them in my area, all ran by asian men/women. The pedicures were priced at 30$.
I loved going there. They were always nice, though they didnt talk much. I typically took a magazine to read. They have massaaging chairs, which I loved also. They would fill the tub, and I would soak my feet for a bit. Then, use a file and scrape feet off, rinse/dry them. They they would buff/file/shape toenails. After that, they would rinse again, drain the tub, and rub the feet and calf with lotion and do a massage of the feet and legs. Then, paint toenails. It was about a 30-45 minute procedure, and so relaxing.
I haven't been in about 2 years but I have noticed now that salons are charging two different prices, one for a cheap quickie pedicure and one for a more in depth one...Everytime I have gotten a pedicure, the polish lasts until my toenails are grown out enough to need trimmed.
I used to get pedicures about every 2 months, and have never had a problem with cleanliness. The places I have gone, they clean out the tub while you are there, and you can see the tub of dirty utensils and clean utensils, so I always felt like it was clean enough.

I stopped getting peds because they never get my calluses off. I am on my feet for at least 9 hours a day at work and have very bad feet.

I do get my nails gone quite often. A full set will run me $50.00 including tip and two nails of hand drawn nail art. Fills are $28.00 including tip and the nail art.

I do often wonder why all the nail salons are Asian owned and operated. I have had some horrid experiences with the painting of my nails but nothing bad in the sanitary respect. I believe all utensils have to be autoclaved prior to usage on customers.

And the plastic bags they (
the medical places) use make GREAT kitty litter box liners! DH obtained a free box (damaged/returned freight), and we've been using them for a few months. The hazmat symbol kinda freaks me out, though. Gotta hide them from the trash collectors!
