Chances of Success?

I'm very new to cat breeding. My queen is right now visiting a stud. She has had one previous litter, but was already pregnant when she came to us. The stud is also proven. He's fathered two litters, so far. This is my first time going through the whole "mating process" with a cat.

They have been together since late Wednesday night, and we are planning to keep them together until late Sunday afternoon. The stud's owner has not witnessed mating, as of yet.

What are the chances of success?

What breed of cat?
How old is your queen?

I have 7 kittens here from a maiden queen to an experienced boy where no matings were seen or heard.

Assuming your girl is happy with the boy, I'd still leave her in until Sunday, to be sure of dates, then take her out and keep your fingers crossed for 21 days

Some are rather discreet with this, with no shrieking. And preferably at night.

So it is not unheard off, no witnessed mating but 63 days later there is a beatiful litter of several small kittens

Another sign may be, two cats semi-hostile or at least vary to each other (ie the female is vary and semi-hostile, and the male is beleguering), as is often in the mating ritual - suddenly got very good pals. = the mating is done.
Sometimes it is the only sign at that time.

Welcome to the Forums!

Good luck!

To CocoCat:
She's almost 2 and is a chocolate point Siamese, he's a 2 1/2 year old blue point siamese.

To StefanZ: That's very good to know about becoming friends. He was very offended to have her on his turf for the first few days and didn't want to be anywhere
near her, but now they're sleeping together and grooming each other.

Thanks for all of your help

Is that usual over there to keep them together for so long? Over here we only keep them together for 48h to make it easier to know when the kittens are going to be born.
If they don't seem interested, I'd suggest to keep them separated in rooms next to each other so they can smell, or even see the other cat, playing 'hard to get' usually works.
The last queen (BSH) who visited my stud was a 'silent one', she didn't make any kind of noice which would have indicated that the mating was successful, I did see them try though. She had 5 healthy kittens approx. 65 days later.

Now I'm waiting for my first own queen to get her next heat, she will be mated then.

3-5 days together is usual here and counting forward from day 2 works well for a due date

Agree with the others. I don't like keeping them more then 3 days with each other due to if they bred on the first day and she released eggs and also bred on day 5 and released eggs again, then you are looking at almost a week's difference in conception and could lose a kitten or two from being "premature".

Most breeders I know keep them together about 3 days or witness 2-3 breedings.

I second witnessing the matings. It would drive me crazy to not know if the cat had been mated or not. I do not know about other breeds but with Persian & Exotics, we assist the stud if necessary by holding the girl and tickling in her ears to calm her down.

Last year I had a female with a male for three weeks - and it was just torture finding out when she was due. Never again. This year my 2 queens that have been mated were with the males for 3 days, a much better period of time IMO.

I have a girl who has had two successful pregnancies, and I have yet to actually witness a male breed her. The first time she was with the male for a bit less than a week, but I was able to predict the due date to the day. I based it on when her behavior towards the boy changed and indicated that she had been on much more familiar terms with him The second time she wasn't even with the boy for a full day. . .

You'll know either way in a few weeks. Either your girl's nipples will start to pink up or she will go back into heat. There is no point in stressing over the uncertainty-- she either is or is not pregnant. There is not much you can do at this point, so why waste the energy?

This is probably some of the best advice I have ever read.

I know my two girls were mated 3 weeks ago but that hasn't stopped me from stressing about whether they are pregnant or not and checking their nipples every day. It is SO not worth the energy
