Tex's appetite

I know I have posted about my feline Hoover-vac on here before. But I have a question... maybe this is better in the Health section.

I put out wild bird suet cakes... and I take them in at night b/c of raccoons.

I have noticed that if I don't put them out of reach or close them up, Tex will either lick the suet off the wires of the suet box... or the last couple of nights, he has knocked the darn thing off the table, it popped open and he is nomming on the suet ( seeds and all).

I can kind of understand that he's attracted to the beef suet, but this is strikes me as just wrong-o!!! Can it make him sick? Does he need more fat in his diet? He has a nice coat and skin.. he gets enough food....

He is almost always cruising for food!!

I will be more vigilant about the suet cakes... but still.. this has me wondering.

I really really really wish I had an answer for this. But i had to comment because its such an odd behavior that I couldn't even find anything on Google.

I guess that the best thing to do in this situation is to take the packaging of the cakes to the vet the next time you go and explain to the vet that he has shown interest in eating them. I am sure the vet will be able to tell you whether or not it is harmful better than anyone here.

Of course it is always best to err on the side of caution and just put them somewhere where he cannot get to them.

But it is only made of animal fat and I'm thinking that it wont be harmful. Not sure about eating the seeds though. Wild bird food isn't as controlled as domestic animal food I'm sure.
